I would go with a revolver for your first hand gun. Easier to use and care for.

I'd handle a Glock, XD and M&P; then make your choice!

Good luck.

Glock 19/26. If you want a little more bang for your buck go with a 32 or 33.

I have a S&W 642 and Glock 23. Both are great guns and I carry them both. The 642 is Wayyyyyyyy easier to conceal and much more comfortable than the G23. I carry it about 90% of the time. If you don't choose well and it's uncomfortable, you won't carry the weapon.

+1. With a $500 dollar budget you are in the b allpark for most of the major players. So look at all of the above and see what feels best to you. I'll also add the FNP series to your list in this price range. If you shop around you can get into a Sig or a CZ too (check cdnn investments for pricing).

Yes. Very good. Just remember that there tends to be a cost penalty on .45s because of popularity. Looking for a .45 will price you out of the market on some of the guns I mentioned (FN, Sig, or CZ).

If it were me (and obviously this is just one opinion) I'd start with a 9mm on a strictly cost basis. They are easy to shoot, have cheap ammo and are generally less expensive to buy. Other than cost though I think the .45 is better.
