Not at that price it isn't. For $450 or so you can buy a glock or an M&P. They are a higher quality gun than the Taurus. I am a Taurus fan though just not at that high of a price.
To clarify: Taurus used to be less expensive and I used to think they represented a good value. IE: a good gun at a very good price. But due to their increased popularity (from being a good gun at a very good price) they have been demanding a higher price. They are now in the same price range as "the big boys" and they are not of the same quality as Glocks, XDs, M&Ps or Sigs, etc. If you want a good gun at a great price (read this to mean a high value for what you pay for) I would suggest the S&W sigma series around $300. Reliable guns, great price. If you want a great gun, get one of the above mentioned brands for around $450 to $550. IMO you absolutely cannot go wrong with a Glock/Sig/M&P/FNP/HK/CZ. I would not buy the Taurus at that price.

Revolvers are also generally less expensive than pistols - though there are some very expensive revolvers out there - and revolvers are less prone to breaking down. Revolvers are MUCH more forgiving about the ammo you use as well.

I would look into a compact CZ75. Great shooter, accurate, easy to conceal. The only downside is that it is a little heavy in light clothing. I also second the Sig 225 p6. That is about the best gun out there for price and ease of carry.

As a "starter pistol" I'd recommend a compact Glock, XD or M&P in 9 mm. Good for carry, mild recoil and most affordable (is any?) ammo.
Good luck.

First the bad news: We cannot tell you what kind of gun you should get ![]() Now the good news: We can help you narrow down your choices. ![]() Several things to consider: 1. Your general size: smaller hands generally mean smaller gun. Gun weights vary from a few ounces for a Kahr to nearly 3 lbs for a good 1911-style .45 (what I carry, but I'm over 6' and 220lbs) 2. what other firearms experience you may have 3. How you plan to carry: waistband holster, ankle holster, etc; and how will you dress around the gun 4. Physical condition: folks with hand problems have trouble with semi-auto's (my wife has arthritis and can't use the slide well so she has a 38 revolver) 5. How much shooting you plan to do: Some ammo costs more And OH SO MUCH MORE! I agree with those who say to go to gun shows, if they have them in your area, and handle as many guns as you can to find some that feel good in your hand, but don't buy it yet. Keep a record of all the ones you like, then go to local gun stores and ask lots of questions. Have them show you how to take apart and reassemble the gun. After you get your top 3-5 guns, try to find a gun range that will let you rent guns. THEN come back to this site and ask comparison questions between SPECIFIC brands and models. This seems like a daunting task, but buying a gun is somewhat like buying any other personal property. Whether you're buying a car, a computer or a new flat screen TV, this is a decision you may live with a long time, and in addition, you may have to stake your life on what decision you make! ![]() One more thing to consider, maybe the most important thing. Why are you making this decision? Can you make the choice to take a life if the situation calls for it? Carrying a firearm involves much more than sticking it in your belt and "that's that". I hope this doesn't scare you off, but these decisions are not made lightly. Make the right choices up front, you'll never regret it. Make the wrong ones and you may not live to regret it. |

I'll echo several posters and say the Glock 23 or the S&W 642. I have both and I love to shoot the 23. It's a little more difficult to conceal so I carry the 642 more often. The 642 will disappear in a pocket holster. The 23 will get more carry time in cooler weather. Can't go wrong with either one.

Reliability, ergonomics, safety features, easy break down and cleaning, Accuracy, high capacity, and sized for CCW....for $450...
you cannot beat a XD9 sub compact. That leaves you $50 for a holster of your choice. (smart carry, high noon iwb, don hume iwb, blackhawk/uncle mikes iwb...will do fine in that price range) or you can save a little more and go for a crossbreed supertuck. ![]() |

Join the GSSF and use the discount to pick up a brand new Glock 19, 23, 26, or 27 for $398.
