I too would chime in on the Springfield XD series. There are many good guns out there and you could do well with most any. The XD series is tough, durable, and reliable. It also does not have the hexagonal barrel so shooting regular lead (non-jacketed) rounds for practice is not an issue. The Glock needs a barrel change to keep it from fouling which adds the expense of the extra barrel. Ultimately, get what feels good to you and fits your budget.

Having gone through this recently, I'd heed the warning about total cost of ownership, especially if $500 is a hard limit. In addition to the gun, you need a holster and depending on your situation, a safe and ammo and a few other things. JHPs are quite a bit more expensive than FMJ.

I think I paid $575 for my S&W M&P9, but by the time I got out of the store, I was down a bit over $800 and I hadn't even bought a holster yet.

I carry a Springfield Armory XD 45. As soon as I can get $500 toward another pistol I am going to get the same gun in 9mm. I've got several other pistols and revolvers, but the XD fits me perfectly.

I just bought a glock 23 this past weekend for 540.00 out the door. Got a free backpack to. Or maybe i bought a backpack for 540.00 and got a free gun. Either way i thought it was a pretty sweet deal.

I just bought a Bersa Thunder .380 brand new for under $300.. I also bought an extra mag for $30 and 250 rounds of ammo for just under $200..

Thats right around a $500 budget..

Glock or XD are the best for that price range. XD might have a few more features for the money, but either gun is top notch
