My buddy has an Ruger SR9 that he enjoys. Price tag here is about 400 bucks new. Slim yet comfortable to shoot. You have very many options open to you. I personally love the Springfield Armory XD Subcompact. You should go shopping and handle different weapons to find what YOU like best. You have to get something that you like, don't just get it because everyone tells you it's the best.

Go for .45 and try the Glock-36...thinner grip of all the other Glocks.

Definitely go to your local gun dealer and handle the pistols that are in your price range. See if they have gun range pistols that you can shoot to see what the perceived recoil is of the models you are considering. A pistol that I love may fell horrible in your hands.

A premium gun in that price range is any Glock. A Glock is the most reliable gun you can find. Sure the beauty is in the eye of the beholder with these guns - but they sure do their job.

Glock is the best for that money...I would suggest a Glock 19.

I really like my XD's 4" and sub-compact bith in .40 s&w, though the 9mm would be cheaper to shoot.

Head to your local gun dealer and handle em all. Dont listen to anyone here. Only you know what you should carry.
