If anybody's interested in shoulder and hip holsters for the 1911, I just ran across some for about $46 including shipping. While I don't have any interest in them, I thought somebody here might...http://www.uswings.com/milacc.asp

Thanks. While I doubt I would ever carry like that, I might just get one of the shoulder holsters. Something about a G.I. shoulder holster has always held my attention.

The strap is to hold the weapon in the holster, typically the military way to carry a pistol (especially the 1911) is to have a magazine inserted, hammer down on empty chamber.

So if the soldier/airman/Marine was carrying it the way it was "supposed" to be it would be safe.

I have an original 1943 Boyt holster like the one in the pic, when I make a repro of it that it what I use as a pattern.

barring mechanical failure of the sear and thumb safety at the same time.........it's "ok" as long as people keep their fingers off the bang switch when they holster or draw the weapon, once the strap is released the grip safety is functioning again.


I agree the pic is kinda misleading, but I can probably swear that many a GI carried it C&L even if they weren't supposed to

I use one like Falkon posted above....

Mine does NOT engage the grip safety. I use it around the farm, when on the tractor or four-wheeler doing chores. It keeps the gun across my chest & out of the way. It's also good for carrying a firearm if you don't pants with a belt, like overalls.

It's no good for concealed carry, since the strap goes across the middle of my chest.
