1911 shoulder holster question
This is more of a gnereal question about the carry technique than anything else, a good shoulder holster isn't really in the works for me right now, and I'm not gonna buy a cheap nylone one. Someone here will have an answer that I am just missing right now. Anyways, I carry my 1911A1 cocked and locked, like it should be done. My question is this, with a 1911 in a horizontal shoulder holster, how does the thumb break keep the weapon in place, since the hammer is back? or does it have to be carried with the hammer down ( a general no-no since that would be down on a empty chamber or full one, neither a good idea.) I dunno, just something that I thought of while lookin through the forums. I'm sure somone will have an answer to this that will fill in the blanks in my mind. Thanks for the input.

Nice rig and pistols.......
I never felt comfortable with a shoulder rig on, but that setup should be well balanced.

A cheap Nylon holster is NOT any sort of rig in which to be carrying a 1911 cocked and locked. It's just not safe. You owe it to yourself to spring for a decent holster. You ought to be able to find one for around 80 bucks, give or take 20. Your life and wellbeing are worth that, aren't they? If you can't afford a good holster yet, wait and then buy a decent holster when you can.

I have no intentions of buying a cheap nylon one, somehow that got cut out and confused in the origional post. Guess I shouldn't write history papers and post at the same time. Although my parents are looking for a Christmas gift idea, and I suggested a Galco Miami Classic, tried one out when I bought my pistol, and I liked it. So we will see what happens there.

Oh, I'm sorry -- I misread your original post, unless you edited since. I'm glad you're not doing that. My bad.

Shoulder Holster
As noted earlier, the strap that secures the "cocked and locked" 1911in the shoulder holster also acts as a "block" between hammer and firing pin.
I have a Galco Miami Classic that I wore most of today with a 3.5" Para OPS .45. I find it quite comfortable as the configuration spreads the weight out across my back. I'm not big on snaps; but it is obviously necessary on a horizontal holster. If you decide on a new Galco, get in touch with me. |
