Aparently my 5.11 vest came without the 'recording device' in the pocket. Although I only wear the vest on cooler nights...not too many down here...I have never heard the 'recording' (Man with gun!) one time.

And, I have at times, spotted others with vests and tried to begin a conversation about CCW only to find out that they had no idea what I was talking about.....????????

Most wouldn't even suspect a BULGE to be a gun, yet alone what a vest might cover.

I would, however, not buy a vest with NRA logo...

By the way, Sixto...do you work an area near I-75? If the wife and I head to the North this summer to see my grandchildren, I'd stop and buy you a cup of java and share 20 minutes of conversation on the way!

OMHO on the vest approach...

Take care,

ret

I looked at the site and found out that you can order a vest without the NRA logo. I went on ahead and purchased one, w/o logo, with the intent of using it as a cover garment...like most, I'm not enamored with utilizing the velcro secured pockets with the "pocket holster". Maybe the pocket holster will come in handy if I have to use a fanny pack or something like that.

I have a Cabela's safari vest and it works well. Since Kansas is just now getting concealed carry, I've worn it to get family and friends used to seeing me in it.

So far, most of the comments have revolved around fishing, photography or hiking. Figure by the time the 5.11 vest comes in, folks will be quite used to me wearing some sort of over garmet like that.

A 5.11 vest tells everyone you might be a gun enthusiast.
A 5.11 vest with a NRA logo validates that.
Why advertise it?
Why not just put a sign on the back of your car that says: I own guns and ammo, follow me home and I'll show you which home to burglarize.

Get a holster vest, it is dressy and looks like a western vest.

Levi's or similar denim vest, cut "tall" does well also, and offers a bit more variety in your wardrobe. Dave Spaulding had an interesting observation, in this month's GWLE:

Reviewing the new SigTac leather jacket, he said his wife commented, "Its nice seeing you in something that doesn't look like you're going to mow down everything in sight......" Hmmmmmm.

I don't see a problem with the vests, unless you're trying to wear one in an environment in which it is obviously not a "normal" style. Of course, with exposure, others become acclimated to your individual style, but that is more of a neighborhood/workplace affair.

I know why we try to keep our carry guns from printing and I know the benefits from the element of surprise but maybe the suspicion of carrying is not all bad ........

I read somewhere that in Florida after they started to allow CCW that the bad guys started to avoid residents as they MIGHT be carrying a firearm. Instead they started targeting rental cars as they were more likely to be non residents and were much less likely to be armed.

So by that same school of thought if I am not looking for trouble and some bad guy thinks I MIGHT be using my vest to cover a firearm chances are he will avoid me and my family as a target. Maybe not, but if one bad guy does pass me buy as a potential target than that is one less confrontation I have to deal with. I am pretty sure nobody wants to use that firearm so maybe the vest is not all bad.

Well now were I to buy a vest with the NRA logo I would add a Fly Fishers patch, an american hunters patch, Bass Fishers patch , shooting club patch, Photography club patch LEAA patch, VFW patch, old Military patches and any thing else I found laying around.

My Fly Fishing vest has 4 patches on it and I just may add an NRA patch.

Yep. Unless you've got a lot of camera equipment hanging around your neck....

Or a fly pole in your hand.

I shoot a lot of IDPA and wear a 5.11 vest. I also wear it "on occasion" while carrying. Its the best thing I have found to actually conceal a gun and be able to draw with any speed. I was curious and asked a lot of my friends if they noticed anything strange about me wearing the vest. They said "Guess you like vests". They didn't have a clue I was carrying. Now the people I shoot with say it screams 'gun', but to the normal person (sheep) it means nothing.
