"I soon will be traveling a lot with my family (my wife and son who will be born sometime at the end of March). Because we will be spending so much time in the car, and subsequently rest stops / convenience stores / etc..., I would like a method of carry that will be comfortable and practical to use"
Under these circumstances, I would want something that would serve while driving, making pit stops, helping with the child (congratulations, btw), etc. As others have mentioned, sholder harness, ankle or cross draw. For deep concealment, you may want something else. |

It is up to you. Carry the way and with the rig that is most comfortable to you. IMO.

You might want to look at a tuckable IWB, like the High Noon Hidden Alley. I use it for my XD 9 SC, and since I'm the type that usually will tuck in my shirt, it seems to work well in just about all situations. With an IWB, I second the recommendation about getting your pants one size bigger to accommodate the weapon.

Welcome to CCW!!!
I carry a XD 45 in a 5.11 holster t-shirt while driving . It gets transferred to a C-T.A.C. when I leave the car. The C-T.A.C. works well with jeans and/or 3 piece suits and can be tucked or untucked as needed. The C-TAC can even be worn OWB, between the belt and pants if you like as it is kydex. I think there is a newer model called the Infidel.

Thanks
Thanks for the advice. I now have a couple of options to look into. Pocket carry and the Smart carry might be the most practical for me at this time, however an IWB for the colder months is looking like a good possibility as well. Of course, I would never be opposed to buying another gun.
Thanks again, BJC |

It's funny how times have changed....my dad carried a Detective Special for the past 50 years in two rigs...an IWB (that doubled as a BPB) and an ankle holster (for the past 10 years, the ankle exclusively) I have added to that with an OWB and a shoulder...the IWB and OWB get a lot of use since I wear allmy shirts out, but I find the ankle the most convienent really warm weather...I know a lot of people poo poo ankle rigs as being slow, but I am more concerned about having a gun on me all the time than worrying about a 1 second draw..and situational awareness is always your best friend.

Smartcarry is a great carry method!
Several weeks ago I purchased a Smartcarry - more or less on a lark. I have been surprised at how well it has worked out for me. It is safe, secure, comfortable and is IMHO a really easy carry method. I carry a Ruger SP101 and a Cold Steel Vaquero Grande foldinding knife (really large folder) and it has worked well. (see pics) I have worn it under jeans, sweats, shorts, and unpleated dress slacks with no problems of printing or bulges. You would just never know it was there. Same for sitting, standing, and riding in a car. I tend to wear it with the holster rig at 12:30 o'clock which, for me, really makes using a urinal quite easy. ![]() ![]()

I've found pocket carry with my Keltec P3AT in a K Rat holster is easiest for me to have with me ALL the time. No special requirements, other than pants with a pocket. In the car, I take it out of my pocket and place the complete package in the console area next to the driver seat. When I exit the vehicle, I place it all back in my pocket.
For my larger guns, IWB and a cover garment is the way that works for me. Last edited by sass20485; February 18th, 2007 at 10:03 PM.. |
