OK I know i have read about this before but a search yielded a butt-load of results. So my question is: how is a shoulder holster "suposed" to fit?
I borrowed a buddies for my fullsize 1911 and want the word from the experts on:
- where it should hang? high...low...
- do you use the hold-downs? (i'd think not?)

and any other pertinant info i can gather to see if its a viable alternative for "some" situations.
I know lots of people here have them and they are not for normal everyday best use but some situations they fit the bill rather well.

for info it is a horizontal model witha dual mag pouch on the opposite side.
I'd say its a middle of the road quality rig.

any help is appreciated.

My G26 shoulder rig is horizontal, rides tight under my left armpit, has a dual mag carrier to offset the weight of pistol, and has tie downs on both sides.

Usually right under your support side armpit (or an inch or so below) with the muzzle slightly canted up works best for most folks.

You'll probably have lots of extra harness strap leather...so once you get your holster positioned exactly where you want it then cut off that extra leather strapping.

You probably will not need a tie-down on the holster side.
If you bend forward you just clamp your arm closer to your body a bit if your holster is tipping forward a little but, with a good harness it really won't move much.

A tie down on the strong side is optional.
It depends on how your harness system is designed.
I usually set my extra mags so that they are about halfway between the strong side pit and the belt.

Thats kinda where I set it was "high".
and you are right...lots of extera strapping from the harness.
I am not in a huge hurry to cut it all off til I am sure its set where I like it.
Just had to ask since there is sooo much extra harness strap!..lol
Thought maybe I was doing something wrong....

Good idea to wait until you have it exactly where you want it. I probable readjusted mine a 1/2 dozen times before I finally got it where I wanted it.

I know it isn't an auto but this should give you an idea...it's a compromise between grip angle and how far the muzzle sticks out...it's easier to find a good spot with a small gun like the 442 since the whole thing can lay within your side without sticking out...one of the reasons I prefer horizontal with small guns and vertical with big ones...also, with big guns I really feel the weight without a tie down....

I keep my rigs pretty tight up under the arm pit. I dont use tie downs but on my Andrews I do use the back strap which is awsome.

Make sure you get an adjustable rig. I use a Galco Miami Classic II, which is very nice. The first time I adjusted it, I had the gun hanging perfectly level, but after a bit I noticed that the butt of the gun was pushing the front of my jacket out. So, I canted the muzzle upward a bit, which tucked in the gun butt enough to where it isn't pushing the front of my jacket out.

Also, I positioned the mag pouches and gun to hang about halfway between armpit and waistband. The reason for this is when wearing a jacket, you don't notice a bulge in my armpit/upper chest area.
