Squeaky holster.

I have had my new pancake holster for my 642 about 2 weeks now and it is still squeaking when I walk. I have read about different methods of breaking in a holster, plastic bag...etc.

What is the best solution here?

In the old days i would suggest bee's wax as a lube on the stitching , now days ill suggest you pm gary or another of our custom makers since the modern finishes may have changed things .

I have a bottle of Leather treatment from Galco that I have used to moisten the offending areas that seems to help.

Maybe one of our many holster makers will jump in with the correct fix!

If the leather is squeaking from friction from the belt rubbing the slots, you can rub a bar of glycerine saddle-soap or even white candle wax along the belt edges and inside the holster slots to reduce the noise, (and friction when lacing the holster onto the belt).
If the squeaking is from a poorly constructed holster there is not much you can do. What I mean is the two pieces of leather front and back that the holster is made out of are rubbing against each other with movement because they were not properly bonded. You can try some talcum powder along the stitching. It may work it's way through the stitch holes and down to the offending area, or not.

It really probably isn't as noticable as you think. There is so much noise in day to day activity that I think it is unlikely anyone would notice, and even if they did I think they would be more likely to think it was your shoes or cell phone case than suspect that you were carrying.

I just had the same prob with a pancake of mine. It just so happens that i had a tub of Mink Oil. I put a rather large amount everywhere the holster and belt comes in contact on both holster and belt. It worked great. NO MORE NOISE. You can buy mink oil anywhere you can buy shoes and it only cost a couple bucks

good luck

Mark beat me to the punch. Squeaking comes from one of two sources - either the belt attachment point needs "lubed" (another great substance for this is cornstarch) or you have a crappy holster. If the two layers were not properly glued when it was made, it's gonna squeak forever and there ain't much you can do about it.
I would recommend against mink oil - it may reduce the squeak, but it will cause the leather to soften up to the point in which it ruins the holster.

What about the candle trick? Or just plain ol' Vaseline inside the holster loops?

Wax is fine, as is talc, cornstarch or saddle soap. I would highly recommend against vaseline - it will be very destructive to most holster finishes and to the leather itself.
