Hello everybody,
I just picked up a S&W j frame the other day and I want to get some speedloaders for it. I have seen some online made by Safariland and HKS. Is there a difference between these or are there any other brands worth looking at?

These to me are the two main choices.

I have both but favor Safariland - they hold rounds tighter and dump with just a shove.

The HKS for me holds rounds a bit sloppy and requires a twist of the knob to effect release. They work of course but IMO need more practice.

Safariland does three main options, Comps I, II, and III. Comp I is smallest and good for carry but Comp II which is a shade larger is IMO the better choice overall between those two. Comp III's are great but quite large - they have a spring assist so that when rounds released, they are ''shot'' in - nice for top speed.

Could be HKS the more durable over time but I still prefer Safarilands for my SP-101 in particular.

Thanks for the reply P95. I will have to look at the safariland ones again. I didn't realize they had different options for them. Good to know. I guess size would matter also since they would be in my pocket and I would probably need a pouch for the speedloaders.

Ditto for Safarilands..... You can drop them and the rounds will not come off. And they are fast to reload your revolver. As a matter of fact I just ordered 4 more for my S&W 65 and my wife's J frame-type Rossi.

Excellent! Since they hold well, do you need a pouch or anything for them for in the pocket carry?

Your choices are pretty much limited to HKS and Safariland.

I myself use Safariland. I found them to hold up better to duty use and daily carry. Either one is good, I just use Safariland because that's what I was issued back in the stone ages of the "Revolver Days" and when I had a chance to try Safariland I didn't like them as well.

By the way, I still carry a Revolver off-duty and as a BUG.

If you have a 642, Safariland comp 1 is your only option. I prefer this to HKS but they seem a little more difficult to lock in place.

The HKS' for my SW Model 27 gave me such a hard time I tossed them. The push and turn thing gave me fits.

I've carried the Comp I's in my jacket and shorts cargo pockets with no trouble (as far as unintentionally releasing shells). I still prefer speedstrips for pants pocket carry just because they lay flat, they're a good bit slower though.
