I want an MTAC but my smith has warned me of finish damage from Kydex. That pushes me into leather but the wait is rediculous.
Does anyone have any pics of finish wear from Kydex so I can decide. Any written experiences would help too. Thanks. Sam. |

Any holster is going to show wear over time, but I would probably disagree with your smith.
A properly made Kydex holster will probably have less wear on you gun. A leather holster will, over time, collect grit on the inside of the holster. This grit will wear on your gun. The kydex holster can just be wiped clean. The MTAC is different because it has both materials, but has the smooth side of the leather toward your gun. If this is a carry gun, IMHO, wear shows use and that is not a bad thing. Ron

I am a custom kydex holster maker. I tell all my customers to use a silicone cloth on both the holster and weapon surfaces. Does wonders for reducing finish wear. The same would help with a leather holster as well.

+1 on what RONT said. ANY holster is eventually going to put some wear on your gun. Just get comfortable with the fact your carry gun is a tool, not a museum piece. Use it and it will eventually show some wear.

+1 for all - carry guns get used, no two ways about it. I like polymer/stainless for that reason.

Pete10 how often would you recommend a wipe down?
And, are there any caveats with the silicone and Gunkote? Last edited by BIGSAM; August 30th, 2007 at 08:44 PM.. Reason: Better viewing |

I'm not going to lie. I think my HK is sexier with finish wear then it was when I bought it new.
Granted a nice custom 1911 wont look to good with the same wear. ![]() |

I worry about finish wear w/40XD-C, the finish is so crappy in the 1st place.
I use silicone spray in all the kydex holsters and like the feel of the draw. Having said that-nothing beats a well made leather holster for fit & feel. IMHO ![]()
