For the longest time I have been wanting to get into leather working and making holsters specifically.

Well being in the mortgage industry and it collapsing, and my inability to find a new job have given me some time. So off to Tandy I went, where I picked up most of the tools I needed and some leather.

I've been messing around with some OWB and IWB, but decided to start with a pocket holster for my S&W 340PD seeing it is what I carry the most. I have actually started selling some and am pretty happy with them myself.

So here are my first attempts, let me know what you think.

Consider a job in mortgage collections/workouts until you find something else. There will be good demand for collectors & workout specialists for a couple of years.

Or consider real estate owned property maintenance for lenders. The number of REOs are overwhelming banks & thrifts.

Good job. Reminds me of the Kramer which I use. Yours does not seem to have any unnecessary bulk which is ideal. Keep up the good work.

They look like great coat pocket holsters, but I would hesitate to use them in a pants pocket for one reason - they would not hold the gun upright in the pocket, although they'd do a fine job of keeping "stuff" out of the trigger area. Good looking work!

The square cut holster will definitely keep the gun upright in a pocket that has a flat bottom, the round cut is for pockets that are tapered(rounded) and should also keep the gun upright.

What pocket holster do you prefer that keeps the gun upright for you?

I'm open to having more options.

Take a look at Kramer and Mika etc., and see that a good pocket holster has to have more of a "wallet" like shape to stay upright in the pocket. I carry a 442 in a Kramer, I think that it is an ideal holster to emulate.

Sounds like a plan. The wheels are turning, I should have a prototype soon.

I've also got another design that I made up a little bit ago that I will post pictures of as soon as it dries completely.

Ok, I have taken some of the ideas that people have been offering and made a new holster for your review.

Some have asked for a holster that has less hand boning on outside and a more positive means of separating the gun from holster. Yesterday I set my mind to trying something different and came up with the holster below.

It is pretty flat on the outside layer, has hooks that catch on the pocket and is just loose enough to ensure gun/holster separation.

I can make them in either smooth side out or rough side out.

My goal was to make something that stayed in the pocket and conformed to the curve of the leg, plus keep it small enough to fit any pants pocket.

So what do you think? What could be improved?

This is my prototype, so I have skipped some steps like rounding and smoothing the upper edges and such.;)

I like it. Dark brown stitching would give it a classy look. My that's petty...great looking work. I like my Kramer because the body side boning of the rear of the cylinder is high and lipped. It is what provides excellent retention. I have to rock my revo a slight bit away from my body to clear it.

I enjoy watching your progress. Keep it up and I think you'll have a lead time soon.
