I e-mailed The Wilderness with this question yesterday but they haven't replied yet, so I wanted to run it by everyone here.

I have an original Instructor Belt. I ordered it slightly larger than I really need, just to be safe. Well, I need to take about two inches off of the Velcro® part. But, I don't want any frayed edges or anything else that will ruin the belt.

Do you think I can safely just cut it?

That will not leave much Velcro. But if you do stitch the loose end of the Velcro then melt the cut edge of the belt.

The best way I have found to melt nylon is to put a thin pice of metal in a vice then heat it up with a torch of some sort. Makes a cleaner edge than an open flame.

Thanks. My memory isn't great, so I'll look at the belt again tonight and see the details a bit more clearly.

Today's excess belt length is the room that you wish you had tomorrow when you are forced to buy another [larger] belt.

Also bear in mind that you won't fit the double-thick part of the belt through the buckle. If you cut it back too far, it won't even be useable. If the belt fits you, and is useable as it is, I'd say keep using it - we all get fatter as time goes on, or you might decide to switch to IWB, or whatever... or just sell it.

Contact Wilderness, I believe that they will adjust it for you for a nominal charge. Great bunch of people, I was by their Phoenix store/factory yesterday and they didn't have my size and color on the shelf. They asked if I could wait and they would make me one, I wasn't so ten minutes later I left with my "custom made" 1 1/2" 5 stitch Instructor in basic black size 37". This is my second, the first one is a Coyote 5 Stitch. I like them a lot as a casual belt.

Another option is to fold aluminum foil over the cut end and press it under a clothes iron on it's hottest setting. Trim off any undesirable pieces with sharp scissors. (Not a bad idea to practice on the piece you cut off.)

I wouldn't. My Instructors belt frayed on its own in quite a few spots, and I had to ship it back a few days ago to have the velcro replaced. I didn't abuse it, and didn't even wear it all the time. Some of the sides of the belt frayed on their own.

I wouldn't cut the old belt, I'd put it into storage...90% of those who lose weight...put it back on...you may need it again!

Get a new one and keep the old one as a 'reminder'...

If you must cut nylon, melt it to seal loose threads. The resulting fumes are toxic; I suggest you don't release them in your living space.
