New Belt & Holster from K&D /more pics

Back 5 or 6 months ago I asked Kevin at K&D to make a special belt for me. Normally the wait time would have been the same as a holster, but this was for a custom belt. No, it is not exotic leather, nor is it embossed in any special way. It is a mechanics belt except that it is double layered like a gun belt. What took so long was finding the plate with the double prongs to hold the belt in place. Kevin finally had to have some made in order to get the prongs long enough to reach through the double layer.

So why was it so important to have a mechanics gun belt? I guess the most important reason was because I wanted one, but besides that there are several other reasons. With no metal buckle out front there is no danger of scratching anything that you lean against.

That is a reason, but not a major one for me. I carry my cell phone just to my left of the first belt loop on my pants. I consider the first belt loop to be the one to my left of the zipper. If I have a regular belt with a buckle my phone case has to clip over two thicknesses of belt. This also means that if I have to undo my belt I have to remove the phone and case. The mechanics gun belt, hence forth known as the dr_cmg gun belt,

eliminates that problem because the end of the belt is behind the belt itself. This allows me to hang items from the belt all the way around from the first loop to just to the left of the last loop.

The other big reason is because I think that using a regular buckle makes belts ugly. There is always a groove where the belt come up and over the part of the buckle with the prong. You eventually end up breaking the leather by pulling it back across the buckle to cinch it up. The only thing that wears on the dr_cmg gun belt is the hole the prongs go into and they aren't visible.

In the same package with the belt was my Laredo Defender for my Charter Arms Bulldog .44 Special.

The fit and finish of the holster are what I have come to expect from Kevin: fabulous. I wore the holster on the new belt yesterday and it works just like it is supposed to. The grip is in tight to my body. The Bulldog is retained quite well, but draws quickly and cleanly. I hope to get my wife to take some photos of me wearing the belt and holster later today and I will post them then.

You can see a bit of the holster on my right and the phone and flashlight on my left. I usually have more things on the belt, but just wanted to show the holster and where the phone goes. The flashlight is a temp. I lost my PentagonLight several weeks ago and haven't replaced it yet. I took of the camp shirt I was wearing for this photo. I can work in corporate casual and that includes shirt tail out if the shirt has a flat bottom. About the only thing I have that is flat - the middle age spread has rounded everything else.

You can see how the holster pulls the grip of the Bulldog in to my side. The pants bunch in the back where the belt is because I wear 37s, but there are no Dockers in 37 so I have to get 38s.

Darryl, I have been wearing a mechanics belt or Liger gun belt for about 2 years. Because no one made a gun belt that was a mechanics belt I bought several regular ones. One went to Kevin as a sample. The Liger gun belt also has the end of the belt go behind the main body of the belt. The dr_cmg (Kevin is planning to sell these, but I don't know what he is going to call it.) gun belt is already more comfortable than the Liger which is made not to twist or sag. The regular mechanics belts worked fine for a year or so, but they began to sag due to the weight of the gun.

Do they stay buckled well? That would be my concern with the hooks.

Of course my Big Ugly belt buckle has a hook and stays fastened just fine, so I guess it should too.

The two prongs hold perfectly. I have never had one of the mechanics belts come loose. The Liger has a hook that is very long and it is sometimes difficult to get unhooked. This is not a problem with the mechanics style belts either. The dr_cmg held perfectly yesterday as I threw some boxes from the back of my truck over into a construction dumpster. That had me bending and twisting just about every way I could.

Now you've got me interested what does your "Big Ugly belt buckle" look like?

Philmont Boy Scout Ranch belt buckle. The Belt died over a decade ago. I was a back country guide from 1989-1991

Very nice setup. By the way all the comments on the Charter 44 have caused me to dig out one of mine and have been carrying it for a few days. Looks like your holster will hold the grip in tighter then mine does tho. You've got a nice combo there!!!

Your buckleless belt is nearly identical to a Safariland belt that I bought in the mid-70s. The prongs and corresponding holes are side by side on mine.

I don't wear it any more, since it's only single thickness and has become quite supple over the years. It's an odd width, too, at 1 and 5/8 inch. It was meant to be worn as a uniform trousers belt, underneath a police Sam Browne belt.

Very nice combo indeed. I confess to being just a buckle dude ........ too used to it now to need to change but I like the idea with the prongs.
