I would recommend both an IWB and OWB holster because that way you are covered for almost any possibility. For my M&P40c, I use either my The Slide (OWB) and Double Clip (IWB) for 95% of my needs depending on what I'm wearing. Pancake style holsters conceal better IMHO and are very comfortable.

Then I would have my friend get a pocket gun as a back up.

+1... Good holster that will not dent your pocket as much as a lot of others.

I have had IWB holsters from Comp-Tac, Crossbreed, K&D, and Garrity. The only one I ever sent back was the Comp-Tac, it was just too abrasive. When I had my XD, I wore the Crossbreed all day every day. Now I wear my Garrity Triskel all day with my 4.25" 1911.

FWIW, I had to loosen my belt 2 holes (1.5") when I wore my XD, I loosen it one hole (.75") with my 1911. I wear the same size jeans that I've worn for years, but some of my old khaki pants are too tight to fit anything extra inside them. But they're tight without a gun too, so it's not the gun's fault.

I wouldn't rule out IWB carry, it really doesn't add much to your waist size.

When I was first getting ready to start carrying, I had no idea where to start looking for a holster. My solution was to buy several used ones on Ebay, and use them to carry around the house (I was waiting for my permit at that time). I learned pretty quickly that a holster that looks appealing in it's package can show it's drawbacks pretty fast once strapped on. The nice thing about buying them used on Ebay is you can sell the ones you don't like for what you paid for them.

Yeah, the box of holsters. I'm slowly selling mine off & will eventually only keep the ones that I'm actually using.

I've come to realize that a good quality holster is usually worth the extra money & wait. I've also found that if 80% of the people out there like a particular holster, it's probably for a good reason.
