Recommended ways of maintaining leather holsters?
Hi,
#1: How do you maintain your leather holster? Leather lotion/conditioner? or do you recommend another type of oil? #2: How do you smooth out scuffs and scratches? #3: Any other tips on keeping the leather nice & healthy? (cow hide or horse hide or your hide or any hide) Thanks! |

My Kramer horsehide recommends no conditioners or oils. Only neutral Kiwi polish now and then.

Do not use saddle soap on your holster. It softens the leather. That's the last thing you want in a leather holster.

Stay away from oils and leather conditioners like Lexol or Bick 4 for holsters (though they are excellent for belts). Stick to high quality shoe and boot conditioners like Kiwi Neutral Shoe Polish, Melatonian Cream, or Properts Leather Balm. Take off the excess polish with a horsehair brush if you have access to one (the yellow polishing cloths in Wal-Mart's automobile dept. will work OK, too). Another step to help protect the holster from sweat and moisture and your clothes from dye transfer is to spray the holster with a spray on finish like Neat-Lac Leather Finish or Master Quick Shine Spray, both of which are available from Tandy Leather Company. The spray on finishes will also make the holsters look shiny and new again!

I'm with Jeff, nothing but neutral Kiwi shoe polish and a buff for my leather. Belts get Lexol.

My leather holsters are kept in a dresser drawer by themselves and with a pack of dessicant. I also keep batteries for my flashlights, cameras, scopes, lasers in the same drawer. High and dry. I go all black with my holsters as it only makes sense to me--camouflage is all part of concealment. Scratches or nicks can be taken care of with a black magic marker. I've used the Mitch Rosen product 'Leather Lightning' on other holsters also just for break-in. After that--- nothing. My tension adjustable holsters have never seen any "care" other than the way I store them when not in use.

A little bit of neutral wax every now and again should do just fine. I don't think much else is needed unless you need to make a repair of a damaged spot.
