Leather makers worry?
As a new holster builder (been at it full time a whopping 2 years), my thought is leather builders don't have anything to worry about.
I look at kydex as a tool, it is needed in some situations more than others. For instance, when I was active duty, my "field" rig was a either a Safariland kyex thigh rig or a kydex reinforced nylon holster. When I served in law enforcement capacities, it was a Safariland triple retention, kydex rig. I used them because I wasn't worried about them getting messed up, scratched, smashed, banged, etc. They were designed to be abused in harsh situations. However, when I left work, I put on my Wild Bill oxblood IWB or my Kramer BScab because they were built to me/for me. Leather is unique. There are no two pieces alike. Each has it's own personality: some good, some not so good. But it can be made into a thing of beauty. I have talked to quite a few shooters who don't want an off the shelf holster; they want something unique or personal. Builders like Del Fatti, Garrity, Wellsmade, Null, Mernickle, Sparks, Rosen, and many others create a work of art, in my meager opinion. Kydex, thus far, cannot provide that. It's cold, typical but, as I said, useful in many ways. Kydex will not mold to your body like a VMAX or a ISP, though I must admit Comp Tac and others like it, have a good idea combining leather and kydex but it still isn't "all leather". I ordered a Comp Tac, yesterday, for my Glock 23. I wanted to see what the hype is all about and I am going to modify it, to suite me. I am going to line the back with soft suede and put amber colored shark on the "face" so that it will feel more like mine and not just another thing off of the assembly line. I am sure that will catch on soon as well. I have seen various kydex colors and features but still isn't the same as leather. I really don't forsee kydex taking over the industry. Things come in cycles but I think leather will remain dominant because of the comfort features and that feeling of having something unique. I think everyone wants to keep up with the Jones' but they still want to remain an individual while doing it.

WARNING: Thread drift.
Below, two 'personalized' kydex holsters. ![]() Above: American Alligator on Kydex. Notice that the hide is center cut from the tail, not bottom or side cut. This is my favorite 'dress up' holster. It has a soft feel even though it's tough like body armor. ![]() Above: Western Diamondback on Kydex. A couple years ago I wanted some exotic holsters so the Diamondback was a 'must have' ... but I like the Gator way better probably because I used to live in FL. Moral of the story: It is possible to get a personalized kydex; it's just something that we don't hear much about or see very often. A plus is that the core is kydex so if they get wet it can't get rot from within. The two personalized kydex holsters are from BearClaw Holsters down in MO.

Very well said, which also proves my point on the many folks who feel the same way. So are custom leather holsters slowly becoming a thing of the past???

No one needs to worry. With the number of shooters growing exponentially, there is plenty of market to go around.

In regards to my recent MTAC purchase, I guess I'm not the best example to my question or concern. To those who know me (not many), I'm basically a HOLSTER JUNKIE! I'll try anything! Because of the recent popularity of the MTAC, I decided to order myself one, just to see what it’s all about. My question and concern is geared mostly towards people who are new to holsters and came to this forum seeking advice on what to buy. That's the real issue. Makes sense?

I'd be curious to know how many own an MTAC because they ordered it to use until their custom leather showed up sometime in the future? I know thats what I did. I really like the MTAC, but have a strong affinity for good leather!

Wow! I really enjoyed this. I wish I could write like you. Very well said. Thank you!One of the reasons this topic is very important to me, is because it reminded me of my first day at a gun range/store to purchase my first gun. After the background check and all is clear with the gun, I asked the salesmen "So what holster should I get?" (I promise you at the time, I had NO CLUE where to start!). I was truly a virgin when it comes to holsters. Never even thought on looking at Gun Forums like this. I didn't even know they existed (embarrassing). So the salesman showed me a Blackhawk Serpa holster with the retention button. Told me all the reasons why the holster was the best in the market. Well because I didn't know any better I said "heck I'll take it!” Cost me $50 plus tax. What's my point? After a few weeks, and researching more about holsters, did I really want a Kydex holster? - NO. Do I really want a holster with a safety button or retention or what ever that’s called? - NO. Did I even want an OWB holster rather than an IWB? NO NO and NO!!! (this is how I felt at the time). So are MTACs really the best IWB one can advise? Or is this the latest trend just like the Blackhawk Serpa's when they were top at their game? Going back to my original example of someone wanting advice on the best IWB for his G-26, I don't even recall the person asking for a tuckable holster but yet the majority of the responses were MTACs? So are we misleading this person? Just like my Blackhawk experience? Or are the MTACs truly the new age of holsters? (hopefully this is still within our topic).

Man, do we have some experts here or what? I really ENJOYED this one too! My favorite line happens to be his first "Kydex, or plastic if you will, attracts a different caliber of carrier than someone who is willing to wait for a true handmade leather holster." - NICE! ![]()
