I'm right handed but shoot left handed. When I was looking for a gun I knew I wanted to find something my wife could shoot too. She's right handed. So I looked at those with ambi safeties or DAO with internal safeties. Hanguns and shotguns aren't a problem for me. Now a bolt action rifle. That's a different story. But there's always ways to work around the issues.

I also know a couple of dealers at the gun shows who carry just as many left handed holsters as right handed. If it's a big show I know I don't have to get their early. The right handed holsters are bought up a lot faster than the lefties. There's always plenty left by the time I get there.
Being a left has "some" advantages.

Yea, sometimes it does suck. I am not a big fan of left handed only firearms either. The Stag AR doesn't take entirely standard parts and that is half the point of owning an AR.

The one good thing is that it is much easier to drive with a pistol IWB on the left side!

Regarding being a lefty, its really not a disadvantage at all. When people are looking at someone and looking for a gun, they tend to look at your right side where the gun is not. As others have said, the only mod necessary for a 1911 is an ambi safety. I use my left middle finger to press the mag release. In LE firearms instructor school, I found that I can reload a revolver faster left-handed than a righty can.

Regarding lasergrips, they are actually more suited for a lefty unless you shoot with your thumbs high. As a righty, the trigger finger is easily in the way of the laser when it is high on the frame and away from the trigger.

Also when a lefty positions for a fight with the right foot forward, a righty suddenly feels very awkward.

A lefty is also a good compliment to a righty, or vice-versa, when clearing a building or operating around a ballistic shield.

Sure, you can find stuff like holsters for us, but they're usually special orders, with "no return". Nobody makes a true lefty 1911 as far as I can see.

I am a lefty. but can do everything ambidexterous. i can throw left or right, and bat either. I carry IWB at 2oclock. for some reason i feel comfortable like that. I think really the only thing i do left handed is iron my clothes and write.

+1 on the high noon holsters

I felt your pain for a while I am very lefthanded, but my dad being righthanded taught me to shoot righthanded and for a long time i was an ok shot, but had a friend teach me about the whole eye dominant thing, then started to shoot lefthanded imagine that my grouping improved. and had an ambi safety put on my 1911, and tried different ways to do all the tasks on my 229, figured out what worked best and then practiced till it was second nature. As far as the holster issue I buy custom holsters have a blade-tech nano for my 1911 and am checking out high noon and a couple more manufactures.

Well, yes and no.

I've done well with a few choices. I don't particularly care which side of the slide the bullet comes out of, so that's one item off the list. All that really matters, to me, is whether I can easily reach and operate the controls.

Take the CZ P-01, for example. It's a relatively large frame, but it's got large controls in all the right places. Right for a righty, sure, but very easily manipulated by a lefty. Instead of your right hand thumb flipping the slide release, you simply use your left index finger. Instead of praying your right thumb is long enough to reach the magazine release on the left side of the frame, I simply use my left hand middle finger to eject the magazine.

Look at the HK P2000SK, as another good choice for lefties. Heckler-Koch has thought out how to create a true ambidextrous slide release and magazine release. Of course, I can't quite reach the mag release button, sad to say, but otherwise, it's a perfect lefty pistol.

One consolation: magazines are ambi, by design. Not that they were thinkin' of us when they did it, I'm sure ... but, there it is.

As for holsters, look on the bright side. It might well take a custom holster maker to do one up the way you want. But, given the long, long wait times from makers, you'll sell it in a New York minute if you ever put it up for sale ... at whatever price you ask for. Got to love the free market!

Obviously, I'm lefty. I suppose I have adapted, sure. But only insofar as I use the left fingers to manipulate the slide release and mag release. So long as those controls are large and easily manipulated, I've got no real problems with any pistol's operation.

Now, scissors are a completely different item. I'm sure I had a folded-paper complex when I was five years old, for all the good that righty scissors did me. Thankfully, first grade saw a new teacher (Mrs. Norton) who saw the light ... and provided (wonder of wonders!) lefty scissors. I was saved! Of course, I couldn't cut a circle or straight line to save my life, but that's another problem. Therapy. Years of therapy.

Brother I feel your pain!
I have been shopping for left handed shoulder holsters for my Sigs. None of the stores will stock them as there is so little demand, and if I special order it is no return. So basically you have to buy it without knowing how it rides. I finally took a chance on one on ebay. It was only the third leather one I have seen in two years.

Lefties rule! Just ask us. We are like an exclusive club. See a lefty and say Hey I'm a lefty too and instant rapport!

Had a 1911 w/ ambi safety and it was no problem at all. Revolvers same thing. Nowadays we've got all kinds of left friendly guns from Glock, Springfield Armory, S&W Beretta and so on.

And as far as buying holsters goes, online shopping beats the crap out of your local gunshop. Almost all the holster makers online make models for lefties of all their holsters. So check out the right handed model you see at the local shop and then order it online.

This is a great time to be a leftie!

Attentions lefties... (note left hand wave...)

You can get any holster you want from Fist in a lefty as quickly as can a strong side right...
