"A good holster can conceal it."

How?

What holster features allow a handgun with a long and/or tall profile to be concealed?

Is part of the solution choosing the "right" carry position for the gun model?

School me on the science of the thing.

You will probably be surprised at what you can conceal inside your waistband. Holster options and position on your body tend to make you more or less comfortable. Unless you wear unusually tight clothing or have an occupation where you bend over a lot (like a plumber) the concealment part is not that difficult. Comfort is key.

this might give you some ideas: Let's See Your Pic's - How You Carry Concealed

A good first setup is something that is adjustable like:

or
Minotaur MTAC Holster

Sure. And of course, one's body build, or physique has a lot to do with where and how as well. Holsters or holster makers are sort of the sub-contractors on a large scale commercial building. You have to integrate the HVAC, plumbing, electrical, structural, materials, etc.........with minimal conflicts. You are the engineer. You can rely on tested and tried models from other engineers, or buildings that have already been constructed, but when you are in charge of the project, you'll need to incorporate your own ideas as to what will work best for your new building.

I'm more interested, though, in what techniques people have used to conceal their larger guns - 8-inch-long, maybe hi-cap monsters. Not really GIANTS, but large guns by carry standards. And yeah, I know there are infinite possibilities for body shape/size, gun size, cant options, etc. If there are certain tricks people found worthy, I'd like to hear 'em.

Most of the "Tricks of the trade" are dressing around the gun and yes, the carry position. I regularly carry a 5" 1911 that measures 8.7" long, or a Springfield XDM9 which holds 19+1 of 9mm

So there's your 8" gun and hi cap "Monster".

I generally carry in an IWB with moderate cant which lines the gun up with my body to keep it from sticking out, my holster rides at either 3 o'clock or just behind the hip at about 4-4:30.

I also use a cover garment to hid the rig. Given the right holster and the right clothing, I can hide darn near anything.
