I'm a recent (last three years) convert to the SERPA style release. The gun isn't going anywhere and drawing and re holstering is a piece o cake.

I own and use both types and it just your preference on what you like. Personnaly I like both styles.

If you are leaning toward the retention device, avoid the Serpa like the plague. The Safariland ALS is a much better device. Above all else, seek training in weapon retention. The best tool to defeat the gun grab is a well trained individual. Holsters and gimmicks are all secondary.

I'm assuming he is talking about the long discussion about the possibility of finger on the bang switch without meaning to. I've read a lot about this, and while it is a consideration I've taken, it hasn't been my determining factor. I just think the Safariland ALS system would be more intuitive for me (plus they actually make a model for the compact M&P).
However, I don't wish this to turn into one of those threads that discusses this long debated topic. Just the preference of a leather thumb break vs. mechanical type retention.
