I have my M&P 40c in a SmartCarry right now @ 9 O'clock on side of my shorts, very comfortable. Would not be wearing out side of pants/shorts out of the house with a cover shirt due to lack of retention.

Yeah, well I have and use the "Thunderwear" version (same thing) but I haven’t considered an external mount. Actually, it may well be a convenient alternative in certain cases. I live in the hottest part of the country and I wear nearly the same dress code as you. I’ll have to try it.

But one issue to consider here is the retention offered by the SC being inside of your pants vs the outside. Inside, there is an'envelope' of containment and outside, you would not have that retention.

Smart Carry is not for me, but that's another issue.
I certainly would not be wearing it as a floppy holster on the outside of the pants, either inside or outside of the house. It leaves too many possibilities for loss of the weapon...a slip on the stairs, rough play with the dog, or bumped by a kid. I like to know that my sidearm is secure. Smart Carry is only secure when worn inside the pants. OK, that's my $.02... ![]()

IMO its the worst way to carry ever. To each his own. I too am in a hot climate and wear shorts everyday.
I think if it works for you then go for it. Its just not for me. I wont wear the Smart Carry in the pants. Outside the pants is an accident waiting to happen IMO.

Bad idea I think. It is just a pocket and doesn't offer any retention. You could easily be one of those guys who's gun drops on the floor in public one day.

Retention questions are valid... that's kinda what inspired my post. The pocket is tight, but obviously not as tight as a Kydex holster or even a full leather holster... but like a leather holster, the weight keeps the pistol in place. If it was loose or sloppy in any way, I probably would have never done this.
I'm not really worried about accidentally dropping it, but if I was actually wrestling with a BG, it could come loose... I'd like to think I could draw before I'm in a wrestling match on the ground, but things might not go that way. Good input, all...

![]() Seriously though, in some cases when absolute concealment is necessary and it's either a SmartCarry or leave the gun at home... then, it's a very good holster. ![]()

I don't think I'd do it. The SmartCarry holster works well inside the pants but outside, since it isn't a friction fit leather holster, nor a kydex holster that grabs the trigger guard, there really isn't anything holding the gun in the holster if it is worn outside the pants. When inside the pants, the pants themselves keep the gun in place. But outside, anything could happen to knock it out of that fabric holster.
I own a SmartCarry myself, and I just don't think it is secure enought to wear outside the pants.
