I use the same holsters for riding that I use for EDC. IWB, either Cross Breed or Sparks VMII. I've never had any problems even at full tilt gallop.

My wife and I have horses and the best way is OWB strong side. I use one of my Slides for carrying a Model 66-1 2.5 or Kel-tec PF9 or M&P 40c while riding. Of course the revolver feels just right when riding a horse

I cover with an untucked shirt or in colder weather a jacket or polar fleece shirt.

Please DO NOT do SOB over your spine in case you get bucked off unless you don't like walking.

S.O.B. SMALL OF BACK HOLSTER like this Galco or maybe the FIST #41

Hmmm You have horses Erik? Well, we have three and I too wear one of your Slides OWB strong side just like I do for EDC.

Yes, a Revolver for horseback riding is the ticket!

I know nobody ever plans on taking a spill, but if you land on your back with that chunk of metal there you're pretty much screwed.
I'd consider some type of crossdraw rig.

Riding is one of the few times I carry at 4 o'clock. I usually carry my snubbie revolver outside the waistband at 3-4 o'clock depending on what saddle/cantle-bag, etc. I have also carried my kahr at 2:30-3:00 IWB, but it would be nearly impossible to draw properly on horseback. I would NOT carry in the small of the back when on a horse. Have known many who trail ride to carry in shoulder holsters, have not tried it myself to attest to comfort.

have always thought a thigh holster would be a good option on horseback, never tried carrying a gun there, but have carried other things there before I got my cantle bag.

what not to do:
1) carry in saddle pad pockets/saddle bags, etc
2) carry near your spine while mounted
3) carry on your body any gun that is at higher risk of discharging when "dropped" with force (in this case, better to carry in saddle pad or bags)- this is why I usually choose my snubbie over my other options
4) carry in a position that will give you blisters when combined with sweat and motion
5) carry in a position that prevents you folding down on your horse, i.e. galloping in 2-point, ducking low limbs, jumping, tightening your girth from the saddle

Yes, I agree no SOB, but I will try 4:00. Thanks for the great advice everyone!

Yes, the Atavar is my Arabian/Appaloosa. He's a good boy. It's great knowing so many other people ride and carry. Seems like a natural thing.

Does he have Arabian brain? Or is he more Appaloosa mellow?

I like the Arabian/Appaloosa cross personally.
