I shoot anywhere from 5 to 15 yards, mostly at 7. I shoot as well weak hand, something that takes practice.

sorry im new but Ive heard 'COM' before, what is this?

Of course at the range today other people sent their targets way back, making me feel a bit inferior being a measly 20 feet ;)

but in all honesty theres no scenarios in my house where id be more than 20 feet away from an intruder, so I figure its a good start.

COM= Center Of Mass. Shooting for the center of body. Practice likely distances, not sure what type of sights you have , but witht he short sight radius(frnt to rear sight distance) it is harder to be accurate than a bigger gun.

Zero to about 10 feet or so, mainly point shooting from either the hip or chest level.
Some days I will also practice one and two handed aimed fire from about 7-15 yards.
All depends upon my mood.

I usually practice from arms length out to maybe 25 to 30 feet. If they are further than that away from me, I am getting the heck out of there if possible.

I've always practiced at 25' with my carry guns, including a S&W 642.

Well, I'll tell you, I just TODAY got my first snubbie revolver (S&W 642) I've owned since 1985. I'll run each load I intend to carry through her at various ranges from 10 feet to ten yards. Checking the point of impact every yard of change. It's got fixed sights and a fairly tough trigger pull, but the break is short and crisp and I've already found the "staging point" should I need to fire a precision shot and steady the front sight down before I break the shot. I don't really figure that the snubbie is more than a pocket gun with reality ranges of about 15 feet.....max. It's going to be my Miami gun for daily carry in warm weather. Possibly a BUG on trips. BUG means BackUp Gun. But for long trips I'll stick with my Glock M27 in 40 "shorty" or my Sig P245 in 45ACP.

Depending upon my mood. If I am really feeling it, I will run to max range on the indoor that I shoot at (25yds). Usually, I will stick with the 10-15 for distance, and 3ft-5yds for instinctive (point shooting). Practice equally with both hands.

If I do shoot at 25yds, I will still shoot with both hands, but I don't shoot the same concentration of rounds. Maybe a magazine or two.

If I am outdoors, I tend to be burning powder more than any real practice. More for recreation.

Close-in, as well. 7-10yds is about the farthest, with closer drills if alone at the range.

Don't be afraid to learn to shoot at distance. Counting on the shot you have to take being close count be setting yourself up for a shot you have never practiced if what happens in the real world isn't what you planned. If a pistol is what you are going to have on you or in your house for defense learn to use it out to its realistic limit.

Here's a video we shot to show that XS Big Dots are useable well beyond the 10 yards that many people claim as their limit for accurate hits.

Will you ever have to take a long range shot with your handgun? Who knows. But the first time you try shouldn't be when your life depends on the results.
