I think it might be hard to make a self defense case when you shoot someone 50 yards or more away form you.

I practise 3 to 10 yards most of the tome with movement and different scenarios set up(IPSC style).

5-10 yards.

Another answer would be "at whatever distance you're likely to encounter a threat", which is kind of a no-answer, 'cause you never know.

But I'm thinking that for most situations, if I can beat feet, it ain't a threat, and I can probably skedaddle if I'm more than 10 yards off.

There are exceptions, of course....

Not at all. If someone is shooting at me with a pistol, rifle or shotgun from 51 yards away my life is very much in danger. Shooting back might not be the best choice but if it is I'd like to have the skill to be able make hits.

7-10 yards. I will shoot out to 50 yards at a gong if at a range that has it for sport and to just be able to do it. Practice isn't the term I would use for that though!

I'll generally shoot from 3-25 yards. Varying distances inbetween. Just recently I've started shooting at long range out to 200 yards with my carry piece.

It is interesting to see where your shots land with "pistol sniping" (No I'm not serious about that term). It doesn't hurt to try it. You never know what you may be forced to do, but I really don't think trying to shoot from this distance in a life or death scenario is a good idea - unless of course you have no choice.

0 TO 20 YDS, different angles, moving around etc. Sometimes I'll get a wild hair and go longer.
Full size pistol I'll go to about 35 yds, and again, I'll go longer once in awhile, just for fun.

5 - 7 yards...

Our range has a special 'added' range to shoot iron targets...it is fun shooting at multiple metal bodies...15 to 25 yards.

90% of my shooting at the range is done at 10 yards. The other 10 % is done at 20 yards, Just to make sure I can hit COM at that range in case I have to do it for real. Initially, I though there would be great drop and drift at 20 yards, but it is fairly close to the 10 yards. Just makes me feel good knowing I can effectively hit at 20 yards.

1m-10M & back to 25m. Its an Army thing... you're judged for some reason by how well you shoot the 25m bull. So I shoot the 25m very very well to keep the young guys in place...
