I do most of my practice inside of 7 yards, but out to 25 yards with a snubbie.

I shoot the old standard LEO Qualification Course from 25 yards in.

3-15 yards. I do one handed point shooting at 3 yards and work out to 2 hands at 7 to 15 yards.

With my snubby I usually practice from 3-7 yards. With my 9mm used for USPSA shooting I practice 7-25 yards.

Try ZERO inches with one hand next to hip, multi and rapid shots, go until empty with the other arm above shoulder covering your head ... practice alternating hands

then move out 6 inches at time from the target continuing multi-rapid shots ... then about out to 7-10 yards , still with one hand but more your body center as the distance increases with other arm covering your neck and head ...practice alternating hands

then 10 yards and up two hands 33% of the time and one hand 33%and opposite side one hand 33% of the time ... with vertical tracking of 4 to 8 rounds from belly button to the eyes ...practice alternating hands

mal-function & reloading drills both hands, one hand and then other hand one-handed

zero to 1 yard, do not forget the practice on the target with a fix blade using the off hand ... consider Kabar TDI (no I do not own stock in Kabar)

build smoothness then gradually increase speed ... muscle memory ... thousands of perfect or very near perfect repetitions ... practice ... make perm not perfect

all should be done in earnest and with vigorous ... strong will to do the job until the final end of situation ...

YOU WILL FIGHT AS YOU TRAIN ! due to muscle memory - flight / fight - Animal Instincts ... Make sure you are up to the task ... there are no "time-outs" or "wait just a minute"

It depends on my mood and what I'm shooting. My SKS is no less than 75 yards, my pistol is usually around 10.

below is some information on the Tueller Drill, named after a Civilian-Citizen-Peace Officer in UT - many Civilian-Citizens and Civilian-Citizen-Peace Officers train using this drill along with some military

Give the Tueller Drill some thought, some reading, try it out, then practice it ... it just might open an eyeball or two ...

Train Hard - Fight Hard ! ... it might be the difference between life and death ...

this is the google search for the Tueller Drill , with many additional links ...

For self protection, combat range (21 feet ) for me. I feel at a longer distance a jury might say that you had a way to escape.
