Here's a "what if" for you Ben. If a particular predator had taken a shot at you or at someone you love at 20-25 yards, wouldn't you feel better able to respond if you had done some shooting during practice at a distance beyond that magic 21 feet ?

I know just what you are saying but I think if I see that much distance between us I'm going to take a chance and get out of there. I know there might be no exit for me and I'll have to take a stance. Just because I practice self defense at 21 feet do not think that I can't hit a body at 25 yards.

Ben,
I was in no way trying to disparage your ability with a handgun at 25 yards and if you took my comments that way, I apologize. I agree with DOGOFWAR01 who posted earlier, that range practice must be varied and not consist of simply standing still and shooting at a fixed distance. A great deal of one's defensive shooting practice should be at distances of fewer than 21 feet. The “21 foot rule” doesn’t mean that these defensive encounters happen most of the time at 21 feet, but that most of the encounters happen at 21 feet or LESS. In my “what if” situation, I was actually thinking about myself or a loved one who might already have taken a hit from the predators gun and wondering if most shooters have considered that they may NEED to respond at longer ranges. I might need to respond with deadly force at 30 yards, just to save my life. Hmmmm, I wonder if I’ll be able to make that 25-30 yard shot with only my support hand if I’m hit with a bullet Clem |

I agree clemmac. But remember there is no set rules when protecting yourself or family. And let me tell you I never took offence with your question to me. I target shot at 25 yards or more but I practice self defense at 21 feet. In my state if you have an escape route, you must take it. In other states you can hold your ground. Some day hopefully Missouri will be like that. I just can't think that some one would be targeting me at that kind of distance. Not saying it will not happen but hardly unlikely. And if there is cover then at that distance then there is a good chance I can escape instead of getting in a shoot out. If I have to pull my weapon on some one it is most likely some one at arms length. And that would be the biggest mistake he/she could of make.

30 feet for me, it is the shortest set up on the range I frequent. I have never been there alone.

I don't waste my ammo at 3 yards, so I practice at 5, 7, +10 yards. Most of my practice is from 5 yards at two targets four feet apart, 2 shots at target 1, 3 shots at target 2, 2 more shots at target 1. Then drop mag and reload and repeat drill until empty. I try to do some drills moving left, then right everytime I shoot outside. It gets boring just standing there shooting holes in paper. Mike Z

I had to qualify from 25 yards, 15 yards and 7 yards for my handgun certs... and the closer you were the faster you had to get the rounds on the target. The toughest was shoot 6, reload, shoot 6 in 35 seconds, and all had to get on the B27 target scoring rings. I had a 5 shot revolver with a 3" barrell for one qual, so I had to reload twice.
If we practice, it amazing how good we can get... if we make it important.
