7 yards and less for us carry permit holders. Every thing else is target shooting IMHO.

0-infinity. Anything from contact to long range. Who's to say you will never be pinned down in a parking lot by the stereotypical deranged gunman with an AK?
Screw the range, they are out of touch. Yeah I know you gotta shoot somewhere. I would prefer something like a mannequin at contact distance. Anybody make a mannequin target? That way you would get a better feel for 3D gun-fu. Off hand striking grabbing and blocking, hand-to-hand, disarms, push backs, getting off the mark, not shooting yourself, multiple assailants. Strongly suggest playing with a friend using airsoft pistols. Check out some of the cutting edge stuff Gabriel Suarez is doing with force on force training and experimentation. I feel he may be redefining gunfights exponentially more than Col. Cooper did back in the day. Some people think he's nuttier than the Planter's factory, I just think it would be nice when everyone can agree on which tactics and techniques are the best. www.saurezinternational.com www.warriortalk.com

I train from contact to 25 yards. Concentrating mainly in the 5 to 7 yard ranage. I spend more time in retenttion and one hand shooting than the 15 to 25 yard practice

Got a baby book around here somewhere that tells me the average baby walks at 12 months of age. I gave birth to five children and ... oddly ... not a single one of them walked at 12 months of age. One walked at 8 1/2 months, one at 10 months, one at 11 months, one at 13 months, and one did not walk until 17 months old.
What's all that got to do with shooting? Real simple. So what!!? if the "average" gun fight happens at X number of yards? It doesn't matter what the "average" is ... it only matters what your particular fight will be. And you don't really have any way to know what your fight will be. I practice at distances ranging from arm's length out to 50 yards, occasionally 100 yards. The majority of my shooting happens at 5 to 15 yards, usually 7 to 10. But I stay well-practiced at the other distances too. pax

I shoot mostly from 3 to 10 yds. But I also do some at 23 yards (longest distance indoors), but our outdoor range has some IDPA size and shaped dingers at 75 yards. I dearly love to shoot those. I don't often, but I like to.

I try to concentrate on distances from 2 to 15 yards and at times out to 50 but at that distance it's mainly for accuracy.

I know we don't keep statistics on CCW Shootings but we do keep tham on Police Officers. Some stats show that as high as 68% of LE shooting happen at 5 feet or less. I know we are not LE but think about the proximity someone has to be to you to rob, rape, steal, kidnap or car jack you? CLOSE and that puts us in the 0 to 5 feet range. That is where the majority of my personal training goes. I do train at greater distances out to 50 yards but 75% is at what we call extreme close quarters or contact distances. It is much harder to access a handgun or other weapon while in a tangle with a bad guy that it is at 10 yards and thats why we practise those distances. The ECQC where a guy sticks a gun in your gut and and says give up the freaking wallet is more likely and being gun focused can hurt us. We may be tangled up in a physical confrontation and how do you access, employ and use a pistol, knife, SAP or other tool effectively, without it being fowled or taken away?
I know we hear people talking about long guns being used aginst us but it is my personal and professional opinion that that will be the .2% of the case. As civilians we tipically do not go looking for trouble and should it arise it is usually close. People cite the LA Bank Robberies and yes they used long guns but who were they shooting at? The Po Po. I suggest that if you are being engaged by someone with a rifle that you E&E as best possible. Not saying that longer distance training should be avoided or shunned. |

I don't know about ideal, but I tend to shoot at 7, 10, and 15 yards.
