It happened during force on force and this was the situation- It is raining late at night and there is a power outage. You look outside and see you neighbor's side garage door has blown open (or so you think). He is on vacation and you decide to go check it with gun and light in hand. As soon as you light up the garage with the light you startle an intruder. He tries to rush past you to get out of the garage but the door closes, trapping you both. He slams you into the corner and starts pommeling you. The fight is on. The good guy was carrying in a Raven ACR appendix holster, the gun was a KWS Glock 17. He drew the gun and got the round off, until the lights were on he hand no idea what had caused the malfunction. He was also doing damage with his reaction side hand. For those of you who think it cannot happen you need to research Murphy's Law. Imagine if it had been a 1911, doubtful he would have even gotten the safety off, even with a light t-shirt.

How would this be a greater problem for a 1911?

The safety comes off during the draw as the gun begins to clear the holster. Cover has no affect on the function of the frame safety on autoloaders, 1911 or elsewise.

This might sound obvious, but... might've been a better idea to stay inside, call 911, and watch from a window? You know, the whole "avoidance" thing?

Just a thought...

I have had that happen, but I have not trained for it.... YET!

I do train drawing from concealment, but never specifically as a malfunction with clothing caught up in gun and grip.

Thanks for reminding me I should incorporate this as a malfunction drill and work something out!

I appreciate the post! You always keep me thinking!

I Sure Have Seen That Before

Here is something that I always do when I carry under a T-Shirt.

Scenario: I am walking to my car, I am walking my dog, (whatever) & the area is dimly lit or dark.

The street, parking garage, (wherever) looks desolate and like there is nobody around.

Preemptively I get my Shirt/T-Shirt out of the way and expose my defensive firearm.

It's the old: If a tree falls in the woods and there is nobody around to hear it...does it make a sound?

If it's dark and a location has the potential to be extra threatening then I eliminate one potential obstacle to a smooth and trouble-free draw and I get the cloth out of the way ahead of time.

First of all - if a non-threat happens to round the corner or pop out of a vehicle - nobody ever notices anything anyway.

Secondly - it only takes a fraction of a second to cover back up if it becomes necessary.

I walk & run my dog every night usually for at least 2 miles. I always expose my daily carry on the side streets as many of them are dimly lit.

It sure works for me even though I constantly and daily practice my draw and presentation from concealed.

I carry OWB and slightly behind the hip in a custom made Del Fatti leather rig with a steep forward cant.

It's a nice snag free carry configuration even just under an oversize T-shirt.

I sure don't know how that would work for IWB carry since I NEVER carry IWB.

Me & IWB carry just don't get along too well. I never could tolerate IWB.
