Wink Meters is what the American military is trained to use ...

As a FORMER US Army Infantry Officer, I ALWAYS (and still do) think of range in terms of meters. Max effective range for the 5.56mm is 460 METERS. For the 7.62x51 M60 a beaten zone is created at about 800 meters but I wouldn't use that for a situation requiring discriminate fire.

Some great points. It is one reason I go to the range less, realising I need something more.

100 rounds of .22 LR (advantage arms upper) then 20 to 50 rounds of another caliber (.357 Sig, .40 S&W, .38 Spl,, .38 SPl. +P). Would do this once a week, then once a month, now I'm down to every 6 months. Just can't afford anything more especially considering I need to up the training beyond what you get at a range.

Yup, we use meters for darn near everything. Except the qual range is still in yards for us (500 yard line is right around 460 meters). But for The M249 the weapon can be utilized much further than that.

If you practice the figures, the triple Lutz's are easy.

Like most of you, the $$$ involved has cut into my shooting, and I reload, that and losing the private property shooting area my buddy had (Imminent Domain).

I shoot IDPA once a month, and I have noticed the impact of not being able to freestyle practice a couple times a month in my scores.

The variable is that I stopped worrying about my scores, and have really been focusing on moving through the stages smoothly, not fast. The more barriers and cover, the longer I take. Even though I know where the targets are, I still slowly slice the pie.

End result, my time is 2x the fastest shooter, but I have less points down.

Shots per month, maybe 100. Need to get the air soft guns back out and start practicing in the garage again.

Yup, that's my story (except the airsoft). Ask Miggy, I have a rather defined IDPA "season" due to the extreme South Florida heat. I shoot usually in the fall and winter and go mid way into spring until about May when it starts to get oppressively hot down here. Can't wait to retire and move someplace with a cooler climate. I could even bear a short and HOT summer as long as it cooled off in September. As it stands now, we don't start to to cool off until about MID to LATE OCTOBER. But I try and make up for the IDPA by running ccw classes year round (where I get to "model" form on "the line") and sometimes the club has indoor low light matches.

I guess all this expense and practice over the last 8-9 months has been worth it.
Yesterday was one of those days I just felt really good, and decided to head to the range. Maybe it was the birthday, maybe it was the new gun, or maybe the planets just aligned right, but it sure was my day.

This was my best group of the day. Heck, it was my best group, period. The six shots here were all fired from a S&W Model 29, using 44 Magnum rounds, single action at 21 feet.
I felt good before we started shooting, I had felt good all day, but after shooting, and the stunned feeling I had when I looked at that target, I can't explain how good I felt, not excited(well a little bit) but more of a feeling of peacefulness, calm, relaxed and just good all over.
Maybe I will join that pistol league this spring, I'm feel like I'm ready

I shoot at our club range within 10 minutes drive, but episodic, not periodic. We can draw and fire when alone on one of the member-only ranges designed for that, but I don't; it's less safe than aimed fire. I draw from concealment at home. I fire at the range. 'Draw' and 'fire' are two separate decisions I choose not to combine.

My EDC gets 2 13-round mags about every other month, first three aimed shots from 25 yds on a 5-inch target, then on the move with reloading, moving from 3 yds to 15 yds on the 8-inch. So long as at least 20 of the 23 moving are in the circle, I'm done with my EDC practice. If not, then I slow down and do it again, until I have that 20 of 23 confidence. Then the BUG, just one magazine, from crouch, 7 yards at the same 5-inch that has three holes in it. 50 rounds x 6 trips = 300.

My big bore hunting revolver generally gets its very own trip to the range, about two weeks before the season opens. Six shots at 25 yds with cowboy ammo which may scatter to 6 inches, then 3 at 25 yds and 3 at 50 yds with my hunting ammo. Generally two and three inch groups, respectively. High practice round counts are neither necessary nor fun with the caliber I carry hunting. Remember handgun hunting is an ambush shot; I pick the time and place the shot. 12 rounds, maybe 18 if I tweaked anything.

The .22 revolver gets a handful of ammo before the season and after each trip afield (at the public range near our hunting area). Maybe one brick per year, just for fun.

Then there are trips with old surplus pistol, just for fun, maybe once a month I shoot one pack of 78 rounds at the range, just for practice, standing, aimed fire from the 7 or 15 yard line just plinking at leaves, or bits of paper on the berm. Maybe I don't go for a month or two, then shoot two or three packs. Never carry this gun to hunt or bet my life on it, but the practice is fun and cheap. 78 x 12 = just under 1000 rds/yr

Then the black powder, maybe a few dozen rounds per year.

So what is that, somewhere around 1800 handgun rounds per year but only maybe two dozen rounds of EDC per month on average? So do I qualify for armchair warrior status? Is there a certificate or something?

My point is that practice is for a purpose. For hunting, I need absolute confidence that I can place a round in the 1 inch head of a squirrel or the 4 inch heart of a hog. And the bushytails continue to fill my cooler every season. If I ever have to fire in self defense, I just need to try to hit a 12x12 COM with enough rounds to neutralize the threat at ranges much closer than I hunt. After decades of shooting and hunting, that doesn't sound like much of a challenge; I pray we never have to know.

In fact, I would recommend all armchair alumni who feel the need for more practice but lack the finances for high caliber ammo to invest instead in a good .22 revolver and go squirrel hunting. Head shots only (there is very little meat, so don't pulverize it), the squirrels pick the distances, and you will come home with the knowledge that you can routinely hit quarter-sized targets at 15 - 35 yards. I'd hate to be stuck with my .22 for self-defense, but could gair-on-tee the bad guy would not get away.
