Less than 30 minutes ago I was watching a TV show on one of the outdoor channels that feature gun handling, shooting and safety. A well known authority on PD was teaching how to move the gun from one hand to another. It sure is strange that this is the first thread I read since watching that show.

I used this thread as a "teachable moment" for my daughter tonight. She was quite surprised I advocated not trying to grab a gun if she drops it, but rather letting it fall to the floor.

Now if only she and I can remember that when the time comes.

I managed to learn this lesson very early in life which is now engrained. It came about when I was ironing a shirt and I tried to place the iron back on the ironing board. Not looking at where I was placing the iron I though it was on the board. I let go and it started to fall to the ground. Just at that moment my dad walks in and watches me catch the iron just before it hits the floor. I managed to catch the iron on the handle and avoided a serious burn. My dad said: "Impressive. Next time let it fall, doctor bills are more expensive than a new iron." I learned a good lesson and to this day I let things fall to the ground and pick it up. If I break it, I just replace the item. A good lesson to learn and something I don't think about since it is natural for me to let items fall. This is something I will explain to my wife and daughters when we go shooting next time. Thanks

My first job was working in a kitchen at a nice restaurant. The first thing the chef and owner taught was to never try to catch a dropped knife. Now I juggle and can catch most things , but I am happy to let the knife fall.

I will have to add the guns to that category.

Not something I had put too much thought in before. But now if it leaves my hands I'm letting it hit the deck.

It is indeed hard to overcome an ingrained instinct to catch. Years ago as a young man in a meat processing plant one of the most drilled into us safety instructions was "Let it (knife) drop!" and get your toes back, too.
At front sight they did a good job of instruction on 'let it drop' in mine and my wife's class.

Tragic story, but excellent post. Thanks for sharing. Definitely a lesson to be learned, and something that I have never really given much thought.

DCJS Instructor, I hope you don't mind, but I copied your post and emailed it to a bunch of my friends/family.

Thanks again.

Accidental shooting wounds Chili's patron-daughter there

Thread above is another example of what happens when people grab for a dropping gun.

Agreed with what's been posted. Don't grab for a dropping pistol.
But hard to overcome that training that many of us have had across the years with lots of sports.
