Last night I almost dropped my PF9. It was a slightly slipped grip rather than a fumble - it never actually left my control, so I didn't have to grab for it. But it got me thinking "What if I dropped it?" It occurred to me that although the chances were slight, there was a very REAL possibility of grabbing the trigger in the process of trying to catch it. So I figured it would be best to just let it go in that circumstance.

Then I read this. Thanks for the reinforcement of my thoughts.

I erred.

I don't know what I was thinking, but Down Under it's 000 for the equivalent of 911.

One too many Cooper's will do that to a mate.

It's instinctive to to try to catch something that's falling, but it can really have serious consequences. We were drilled at culinary school to let a falling knife drop as well. At the same school I watched in horror one day as a classmate tried to catch a wineglass that fell off a shelf, broke as it hit the next shelf and the guy tried to catch it on the way down, cutting him pretty badly.

This is something that I had not thought of before. Maybe posting this tragic story will save someones life.

This is something I have never thought of, thank you for bringing it to our attention.

I'm gonna be sure to pass this info to other gun owners I know.

Thanks guys.
I trained myself to throw up my hands whenever I drop a knife or other cutting tool.
Now I will do the same with a firearm.

Excellent. Although it's mentioned in our training, I'm thinking a small exercise would help students develop this one anti-instinct reflex.

I added this into our training a few months ago after reading a story of a young man who fired a round through some townhouses.

If you handle a gun often enough, it'll happen.

ProShooter, I took your excellent CHP course (recently during Nation's gun show), and yes, you did mention about this rule. This was actually my second safety course, just don't want a mistake because it can be fatal. I am very comfortable with various fire arms, but still for the cost you guys charge, I have no regrets; Much cheaper than ignorance. I have been reading a lot because this is a topic I can't afford to be ignorant about.
