Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

I've got a 6-7 year old Kershaw Whirlwind that opens as smoothly and quickly as it did the day I bought it. Locks up just as solidly too. Not to mention the very reasonable price.

I probably should have said the best available that I have personal experience with as there are brands that I haven't tried. I did say the best in my opinion.
Fair enough...

Isn't it still a liner-lock, though? I dunno, for general purpose knives my liner-locks have done plenty fine, but for hard use and abuse (like stabbing meaty things) I would think a lockback or axis lock would be the most secure. I've had liner locks slip out at unfortunate times even on my favorite knives.

Yes,AFAIK all Kershaw Speed Safe knives are liner locks. I absolutely agree that Axis locks and back locks are more secure than liner locks.
I own many folding knives of all types. I do not consider any folders to be suitable as weapons. All locks can (and do) fail.

The degree of dexterity required to bring a folder into action is also a big concern. While I have no first hand experience with a life or death SD situation, I tend to think that adrenaline dump and the loss of fine motor control that accompanies it will make successfully drawing and opening a folder an iffy proposition.

In my opinion folders are tools. If you need an edged weapon you need a fixed blade.

Rifles are more effective, but we carry pistols because it's more convenient.

Fixed blades are beefier, but we carry folders because it's more convenient.

Either way you'll be going against the stop pin in all likelyhood - and it's not going to over an extended period of time. Compare the lock bar on a Kershaw to say, a CRKT M16 - there's no comparison in the thickness of the locking bar. Do the same with an Axis lock, vs. a liner. Look at how deep the notch is on a quality lock back. I really don't see a quality, $50+ knife lock failing if you use it as a knife, and not a mallet or wedge. Toss in that 99%+ of all forces on the blade are not going against the lock, but against the stop pin, and I think that most people look at the lock for the wrong reason.

I carry a SOG Visionary, which has a knock-off axis lock to keep the blade in place. I'd love to get a waved Spyderco Endura with plain edge - but in all seriousness, when it comes to a self defense with a knife - my first, primary plan of action is get away from the blade and draw my gun. The knife fight is the last thing I want any part of.

I don't do liner locks or frame locks - I don't like putting my finger infront of the blade to take off the lock.

It's also illegal to carry a rifle in many jurisdictions, the one where I live for example.

True, but you can find a lot of fixed blades that are about the same size as your average folder. Unfortunately fixed blades are illegal in many jurisdictions as well...

I can't argue with any of the above.

I have to disagree with you here. I've seen locks fail. Yeah, it may be unlikely, but it's far from impossible. Why take the chance?

I'm right with you on this one!

To each his own.
My EDC gear consists of:
1) Strong side handgun(XD .40 SC when it's warm, XD .45 Service or 1911 when I can wear a cover garment).
2) Weak side BUG(P3AT lately) in a pocket holster.
3) Two reloads for my primary, one for my backup.
4) Strong side folder strictly for everyday type cutting tasks.
5) Weak side fixed blade(2"-4" blade)carried IWB strictly for "Yo! Let go of my pistol!!" type situations.
6) Surefire L4 or 6PD
7)Cell phone.

Yeah, I do carry a lot of crap with me.

Perfectly legal to carry a rifle, or a fixed blade, here :)

Locks do fail - but when you're cutting, you're not putting the stress on the lock. You're putting it on the stop pin. To each their own, I prefer the strongest lock I can get, but in all reality a slip joint would do the job for most daily things if you want to be technical. If I were to buy a folder with absolute intent of only using a SD knife, it would be assisted, and I'd also grind a wave feature on the blade - it would be one where the least input from the user would open the knife.

I carry my folder in the left pocket, a 1911 strong side hip, 1 reload in the left pocket, cell in the left pocket, and a fixed behind my left hip.

I have the same knife and I love it. Its the only thing I can carry at work. I can't have firearms or fixed blades.

I agree that Kershaw makes some of the best AO knives. I carry a Leek.
