Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

Canes are an excellent tool but in the confines of an aircraft their full potential is likely to be compromised.

Since "Kubatons" are prohibited I like to carry my Alpha Innovations Stylus and my Surefire L2.

My fear of carrying any of the pens marketed for self defense would be that some TSA agent does a little research and all of a sudden you end up being relieved of your $80 pen. There will be no arguing, it will be confiscated or depending on where you are you may be allowed to send it back home. The AI stylus is an economical $7.

If you do have to use your light or pen as a kubaton it is not the time to test out wristlocks and pressure points. Think massive central nervous system disruption AKA hit them in the head...a lot. Collar bone has a good effect to in deanimating the arm.

Doc (the instructor) mentioned a few ways that you can defend yourself on an airplane, where things like guns and knives are not allowed. I would like to know your ideas. Here are his:

1. If you are experianced in disarming, martial arts, etc- kydex gloves/armsleeves. Easy to disarm someone with a boxcutter or other small sharp object with those (and if you don't have disarming training, you should! I'm looking forward to taking that class)

2. a pair of tube socks. once you are past security, buy a can of pop or someting else that size thats heavy. Or when the flight attendent asks you for a drink, ask for a coke upopened for later. Seen the movie "langoliers"? A heavyish object in a tube sock can do a LOT of damage

3. objects such as pens

4. look around you! one is almost always within arms reach of some kind of weapon. break off the tray in front of you and you will get a nice sharp object.
and if all else fells. A boot to the jimmy sack might be required..... and then a bunch to the nose, and then if you can grab there wriste and bend there hand just so, and then drop to the ground/floor useing there wrist as a center point to break the fall. ...., if they have not stopped yet they will most likely be rolling on there side holding the wrist that should be compound fractured from the previuse manover. with there neck exposed, well just give that a firm stomp..... That should do it. Now if there are more than one of these bad guys... please keep training in mind and improvise

Anything in the right hands is a weapon. seat cushions are good for anti slash attacks. Ps they have handles on the bottom because they used as a flotation device.

I am going to get a Mag-Lite with 3 AAA batteries to fly with for BG's. Are they ok? (under 7" ?).

Get your hands on a seatbelt extender. They have them. Heavy for hitting and a restraint.

Glass bottles from the nips of booze. There are only a few that are still glass, Absolut and Tanqueray come to mind.

Along the same lines, tear up an aluminum can. While you won;t be able to stab with it, the pieces should cut nicely.

The torso strap on the life vests can make a nice noose. Also, those are operated with CO2 cartridges, 2 of them per vest, be creative. The gas is REALLY cold too.

Other easy things to have: Car keys (you can even get a blank from your local hardware store and sharpen it with a file. No one will be the wiser. Wrap it in electrical tape or shrink wrap so you aren't always stabbing yourself with it.) Roll of quarters or a heavy flashlight, the little arms (temple bands?) on your sunglasses.

Guns and more
Don't forget the seat cushions. I decided if I have to charge someone, I'll put a seat cushion on each arm, (remember, they have straps for flotation) and off I go. He may get one chance at me, but then he'll be down too, with a hundred angry passengers behind me.

You could also probably use the drink carts as a battering ram

Defensive weapons on plane

Long handled (rat-tail) comb, metal or hard plastic , can sharpen the
end to stab with.

Millwall Brick - newspaper or magazine folded flat and rolled into tight
tube, tip bent over and tied in place with shoelace. Used by English
soccer hooligan to beat the !@#$ of each other during game - very
effective club.

As stated before small metal case flashlight (Maglites)

Metal carabiners - improvised brass knucks

metal pen
