Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

I have carried Smith and Wesson knives for years. I bought and gave many away for Christmas presents as well to family and my sons. My Smith I carry has been with me every day for 8 years now. Unlike most, I can keep track of my "stuff".
Good idea from above; gun shows, dealers..find what works best for you. Luck.

I'm in the market myself. Went to a gun show a couple of days ago and jeeze the selection is overwhelming! That being said, I met a very instructional vendor who spent a lot of time with me. He eventually swayed me away from cheap imports and fancy, dust collecting shapes and complex mechanisms, towards an American made brand with a lifetime warranty. Kershaw. I tried several and decided that the size and type for me was the KERSHAW SHALLOT 1840CKTST BLACK ASSISTED OPENING KNIFE. It's thin, light, simple and works like a charm. Admittedly I didn't buy it from him as I don't have the funds yet ($65), though a good price for a knife that MSRP's at around $100.
I will put the bucks aside and look for one at the next show.

Assisted Openers Are Illegal In Texas

Citing statutes is a great start, until a court interprets that statute in a manner contrary to your interpretation.

In Thomas v State, 2007 Westlaw 4403585, Texas' 4th Court of Appeals upheld the lower court's decision, which held that an assisted opening knife was an illegal switchblade, interpreting the Texas penal Code. The case originated out of Floresville, on a school campus. Texas' 4th Court of Appeals presides over 32 counties, not just the city of San Antonio.

The decision could be cited as precedent elsewhere in Texas (I don't practice state criminal law).

The case made the cover of the August 2008 issue of Blade Magazine (see pages 10 and 52-53). The American Knife and Tool Institute (ATKI) has hired a lobbyist in an attempt to change the law.

As noted elsewhere, you may be better off with a Surefire flashlight with a crennelated strike bezel (until those, too, are outlawed). OC or a Strider DB may be viable alternatives/additions to your EDC, just be sure to check the CURRENT law and campus regulations 1st.

Regards, your fellow San Antonian

I have to disagree with the strike bezel on a flashlight-
It turns what is an obvious tool into and obvious weapon
It tears the crap out of clothes
If you take two people and hit them both in the forehead with two Sureifires, one with a strike bezel and one without, I believe you will get the same results even though one may cause more blood loss.

Central nervous system disruption (electrical system) is much faster to stop an attack than a Circulatory system disruption. This is where using hammer fists with a Surefire comes into play.

Some people will say that the strike bezel is for pain compliance. To that I say what is a citizen doing using pain compliance? And if it is a police officer doing it I want to know why you are using an object that will cut/puncture skin for pain compliance. Just some thougts.

My opinion on the TDI, Karambit or any other specialized blade type is that everyone's training time is limited and I don't have the time or interest in learning to use a specialized blade type/shape. To me a knife, is knife is a knife.

I have spent very little time with the TDI and I guess I can see it for uniformed officers. But for plain clothes officers and citizens who are likely to have their tools concealed, deploying the TDI or other fixed blade from the waistband means having to clear a concealment garment as you do on your strong side. Just not my cup of tea. I cannot get into a knife with it's own manual of arms.

I like the TDI and finds that it hides very well, even at the waistband. I do not think it's a good knife for someone who does not intend to get training with the knife: it's not that the TDI is hard to use, but it's a very specialized tool that can't veer far from its niche. For a fixed blade, the Emerson La Griffe posted earlier might be the best option for a first defensive knife. Just don't carry it as a neck knife.

Either go down to your local Walmart or goto Search results for knives - Wal-mart and check out there knives. They have free Site to Store shipping and will call you when the knife comes in. They have 3 different Spyderco knives all under 50 bucks with different blade options (plain edge/serrated). I personally would choose the Kershaw Tanto Blur with partial serrated edge. It gives you the best of both serrated and plain edge with the tanto blade. Plus they have it at Wallyworld for 55 bucks.

Spyderco Endura IV in a Magill Pocket Sheath for my EDC Backup. I carry a Spyderco Native in states that require less than 3 1/2 " length. I had carried more expensive knives for years, but I have settled on Spydercos and on the Endura IV in particular. Perfect carry knife and substantial enough to use as last ditch defense.
