| Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver. |

A lot of good replies here, so I won't bother to repeat what's been said. However, I would urge you to really consider why you need the knife. A knife fight is something to be avoided -- no one wins (you WILL be cut) and significant training is required. If you are going to engage in one, then get a longer knife that will provide a reach advantage, and make sure it won't collapse on you during the fight (which is why I LIKE the AutoLAWKS of the M16-14...one less thing to focus on doing). The M16-14 or the M21-14 are good alternatives. The SF versions also provide a real hilt for added protection, and neither is AO. (BTW, I also have a Kershaw Spec Bump -- love it.)
Having said that, you'd be better off with a baseball bat, a collapsible baton, pepper spray, taser, etc. than with a knife. Last edited by alnitak; January 6th, 2009 at 02:17 PM.. |

I work in a VA hospital and I'm limited to 3" blades. I went with the Spyderco Native -pocket chainsaw. If you've ever done any knife fighting drills that include drawing your knife when shtf, a fixed blade is much quicker. I'm still having a hard time finding the perfect fixed blade edc knife. The Blackhawk Crucible (by Kelly McCann) is nice, but looks bulky.

I really appreciate all the great replies. I also appreciate the advice of "stay out of a knife fight." I fully agree with that and avoid potential confrontations like the plague. It truly is a last resort (better than my bare hands) if a life or death situation arises.
Plus, after about a month of carrying a Gerber EVO I have found how useful it is for opening packages/boxes/etc! |

Twitch XL
Can't beat a SOG. Check out the Blink, available from Dick's; or my favorite, the Twitch or Twitch XL. The Blink doubles as a money clip, so it may be more socially acceptable to the uninformed.

Being attacked with and edged weapon....probable. Being in a knife fight...improbable.

The best fixed blade knives for concealment are hideaway knives, they are very sharp, concealable and best for personal defense. There is also a variety of carry options, just dont use it as a neck knife.. My favorite is the tigerclaw.
