Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

Aloha ALL,

I'd recommend this as a good starter, because it is cheap, expendable, and lots of LEARNING can be done with it, it is durable and gives a lotta bang for the buck:

Boker Plus Trance:

OR...the Boker Plus DIREKT for the same reasons as the Trance, but it has a Ti-coat, and a sub-hilt feel to it:

OR...you could possibly get two of these in regards to the price you mentioned...one for carry and drone one out as a trainer and train, practice, rinse, wash and repeat.
Boker Plus SUBCLAW:

God bless and keep us posted!

I don't think there's a better value in the knife world for any purpose than the Spyderco Endura or Delica. Yeah, they look funny, but that funny shape makes them quick to open and comfortable to use. Spyderco tests their equipment hard; their locks are strong and the blades come sharper than just about any other factory knife company in existence. Take a look at them if you can find any at a store in your area.

The one thing I strongly suggest is don't get a liner lock for SD use. They have a tendency to fold up at the worst possible time. Frame locks, lockbacks, and any of the Axis lock copies are much more reliable.

I second the recommendation of the Endura for price, durability and availability of a trainer. Also for SD purposes I would not worry about liner lock failures. The older non recessed AXIS locks were evidenced during our own force on force to be prone to failure using angle one cuts (traveling high right to low left) the most common initial cut. Here is something I did on the Subclaw. I have spoken to Boker and Chad about doing a trainer for the Subclaw.

My 2 cents.
The most important thing I have ever been taught about selecting a blade for self defense is this: You need something physical on the knife to prevent your hand from slipping down on to the blade when making any kind of stabbing motion. Good rubberized grips are not enough. Then there is sweat and blood all over your hand and you have lost fine motor skill and that adrenaline is making you stronger than you usually are.... you need some sort of cross piece.

The Boker in the picture above has an excellent example of what I am talking about. Other than that as far as I am concerned a metal blade of any type will do the trick on opening up some one's skin.
