Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

He is only doing his job as a senior moderator, it is nothing personal. The rule is there not only to protect the forum, but all of us members as well! You will find Captain Crunch has a vast knowledge of firearms and cartridges and all related items. He is also tolerant of us members and can be very helpful if you let him. I think he's a really good Joe IMHO.

Yes, rules are rules.

These are the same rules you agreed to abide by when you registered on this site.

If you need a refresher course, I can always arrange for you to re-accept the forum rules, if you wish.

Here is an update: Does this mean we can carry concealed in National and State Parks?

And you have been able to open carry in National Parks for as long as I can remember. Either that, or every single Ranger I have ever ran into while horseback camping and/or backpacking for the 34 years of my life has had no issue whatsoever with myself and most of the people around me OCing various high-caliber revolvers right in front of them. As hardcore as these Rangers have been about gaming regulations and other minutiae, I seriously doubt that all those Rangers over all those years would have let us slide if we were committing crimes by having those weapons on our person.

PMSNBC reports this: Congress votes to allow guns in national parks - Capitol Hill- msnbc.com

Man, I am completely dumbfounded at the amount of insane fear so many people have regarding guns. I guess because I own guns and I have a CCW permit, I am a complete homicidal maniac hell bent on destroying the world!!

I am actually insulted at the words used by these viral anti-gun people. It is as if there is some way in which by the very fact of buying a gun there is some virus implanted in which I suddenly am turned into a mass murderer.

I am tempted to set up a website where I have a webcam pointed at a loaded chambered firearm, just so I can catch it killing people all by itself!

I am just completely stunned.

From an article I read in this Federal Eye - National Parks Gun Law Takes Effect in February

Quote:
An astue letter writer proposed in today's NY Times that if people want to bring loaded, concealed guns into national parks then there should be a daily fee, per gun, with an accompanying window sticker attesting to having paid the fee. Seems fair to me, then we will all be able to identify the cars to avoid. I further propose a fee of $100/gun/day, and that the sticker be hunter orange, 12 " by 12" square. You gun nuts want to pack heat, fine, but the rest of us deserve to know who to avoid like the plague.

Smile Open Carry of Knives in National Parks

Here you can carry a large knife in plain view, at least by state law... Can you carry a large (and by large I do *not* mean machette or sword, but a practical hunting knife that could be used for self defense) knife openly into national parks if the state allows such carry elsewhere?
Live near Great Smky Mtn Nat Park, TN and have never had an issue
with it (most Rangers have either small field knives or Buck type folders) as long as it is worn openly (not concealed-as worry exists
for safety-of the rangers/visitors. There have been quite a few nutcases lately arrested in national parks that were mentally off their rockers. That casual talking when the ranger says hello, how're you doing, where you staying, etc they are mentally evaluating you).

I think it would depend on exactly "where" you are also.
We have a huge area called Cades Cove where they hold festivals, etc and it probably would seem "weird" to be "there" where there is essentially no camping, etc that you would have a use for such knife. Also note some stores located in parks and teaching areas or horseback riding stables areas, carry might draw undue attention.

Have noticed occasionally people stop at local stores after coming out of parks & forget they still have it on. A guy encountered a local LEO and the officer knowing, just advised him to please leave it in the car-he did-and all was well.

Call your local ranger station. Ask about area you will be going-sometimes they have rockslides/closures, etc- this may prevent a big traffic jam wait and you will be informed on what makes them "nervous" and would draw attention to yourself. Most poachers use larger knives and that along with a ranger fearing you would be destroying the park if you used a big knife to cut down saplings to make the latest survival shelter might make him stop and ask why you have a huge pig sticker. Around campsites, it's a common thing here. As long as you're not involving in criminal activity, most have so much territory to cover they are just happy you don't have a complaint.

Also, thanks to Captain Crunch for keeping us in order & on topic! Moderators need our thanks & respect. It's a big task coving a forum
the size of this one. I've learned a great deal of helpful info from reading here and our hosts deserve special thanks.
