Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

Hmmmmm, is it time to move "knife shopping" ahead of "getting DTV ready" on my to-do list?

That ain't gonna make the wife happy.

Many/most states already have laws against gravity, one handed, and assisted opening knives. They are usually ignored unless tacked onto more serious charges.

I wonder if this will include my old Boy Scout utensil kit, i could open that with one hand and the knife was pretty sharp

Oh come on... we all know no honest man needs to open his cans so quickly... I mean, just use a hammer and screwdriver!

Oddly I cannot find a direct .gov source for the document as is posted.
I did though locate a full copy of the document as posted that is not truncated by four pages including the cover page; http://www.strtrade.com/wti/2009/may/21/43genno21.pdf <Scroll down to page 5>

I did find a ruling on same dating back to 2004 finding against Fiskars toward their desire to import for sale a Gerber branded assisted open knife as based on the exact same position; http://www.customs.gov/linkhandler/c...t/39genno5.pdf

It is my understanding that this ban will include all folders with a thumb-stud, thumb hole, etc. American manufacturers are in a panic trying to understand if they will be attcked somehow in all of this. Details are somewhat sketchy at this time.

Right now they're just trying to ban importation of and interstate commerce in assisted opening knives by reclassifying them as 'switchblades'. Frankly, if I thought it would stop there I wouldn't really care outside of the general " shall not be infringed" type of outrage. I own several AOKs but I don't carry them as defensive weapons. I just don't trust them to work when I really need them to.

The real problem is that the definition of 'switchblade',
Quote:
§12.95 Definitions.

(a) Switchblade knife. any imported knife, “gravity” or “ballistic” knives, which has one or more of the following characteristics or identities:

A blade which opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a button or device in the handle of the knife, or any knife with a blade which opens automatically by operation of inertia, gravity, or both;

(2) Knives which, by insignificant preliminary preparation, as described in paragraph (b) of this section, can be altered or converted so as to open automatically by hand pressure applied to a button or device in the handle of the knife or by operation of inertia, gravity, or both;

(3) Unassembled knife kits or knife handles without blades which, when fully assembled with added blades, springs, or other parts, are knives which open automatically by hand pressure applied to a button or device in the handle of the knife or by operation of inertia, gravity, or both; or...
especially the part I've highlighted above, could easily be reinterpreted to include almost any and every folding knife. If you can grasp the blade and perform an inertial opening - PRESTO! it's a 'switchblade.'

For quite a few years now CBP has held the position that AOKs are not 'switchblades'. If they reverse that position what's to stop them from pulling more shenanigans?

Once the Feds decide that anything that can be opened quickly with one hand is a 'switchblade' I don't think it would take very long for most of the states to follow right along baaaaaing as they go.

Gee, and we've all been sneering at the UK for trying to ban knives....

Sad, and scary, to think where all this is headed.

man this sux, I use a Timberline AOK every day. I love being able to hold a wire or insulation with one hand and then grabbing my AOK with the other and do whatever needs doing.

It makes a great back up for SD too.

Dumba** politicians never seem to be happy unless they are ruining someone elses day
