Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

Check out the Rat Cutlery forum on Bladeforums.com lots of good information on them. The non serialized HEST knife is now available it costs around $100.00. I've had a tough decision to make this weekend either to buy the H.E.S.T. or RC-3.

You know not of what you speak young jedi.

Diamond works well, but I've used a rock from a spring bed several times to sharpen a D2 blade, more than once just to prove it can be done. It takes care and patience, but it certainly works. . .it helps if you have good technique and experience from years of using whetstones. Too many of you new guys are spoiled by your crock sticks, diamond sharpeners, and whiz bang three angle crap they sell on late night QVC.

Guess I'm giong to have to make a youtube video for you boys when I get back home.

I said diamond works best could you use a rock to get a utility edge sure but it will take a LOT longer.By the way I have sharpening freehand since I was 8yrs old and I am almost 42 now.I have tried the sticks and jigs I always come back to freehand. Lately I have using sandpaper on leather in the place of stones to get a convex edge. Also I have found stropping with some buffing compound on a piece of leather works wonders to get an ultra sharp edge. It also helps maintain that edge between sharpenings with light to moderate use of the knife.Just hit the strop a few strokes every couple of days and you can maintain that sharp edge.

Point taken, it does take a while with a river rock and D2. In regards to your age, welcome to the old guys club.

After rereading my previous post, it sounds a bit condescending. Likely the beer talking. No offense intended.

Something I found several years ago while working in Honduras/Nicarauga for putting the finishing touches on a blade were either a few strokes along the top edge of a car window, or, even better if you can find one, the ceramic insulator out of a metal halide (aka mercury vapor) light bulb. They're the ones used to light up sports stadiums, and occasionally on portable light towers; the ones that construction crews use that can be towed by a vehicle. Very fine grained ceramic material and comparable to stropping.
