| Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver. |

If I can't carry a gun, I'll Open Carry a big fixed blade like the KBAR, the Bowie, or my Continental Army light horse lion's head pommel sword. Can you say machete? But for concealment, I like the 3" variety. My EDC is a Kershaw Leek which stays folded and, I hope, never has to cut cardiovascular. My BUK (back up) is a $10 Winchester that has been ridden hard and put away wet. The less I spend on a BUK, the longer it seems to stick around so I can keep it touched up with a Lansky sharpener.

Not the $10 F.C. knives I have. If the blades didn't break, the prying action would probably break them at the joint.

I think it is GREAT that you like your $10 lo-buck special! I use a Delica, for many years. I think some day you might want to upgrade, and when you do, try a few knives, and pick one you really like. Then carry it always, and use it... a LOT. Even when you really don't need to. It will become an extension of yourself. My Delica is far from perfect, too, and a lo-buck in some folks' eye, but I can have it out and at the ready quickly. I lost one about 8 years ago, and replaced it immediately. Have fun wth your $10 blade!

Joking of course, if only it was that simple. Knives can be one of the most vanity ego driven industries there is. How many hollow handled Rambo knives have been sold because some fake fraud part time broad Silly Stale-one played a man using hollow handled knife in a hollywood movie? Far too many Knowing what it is you want to use your knife for and what design best suits those needs. Knowing a little about the different steels what their upsides and downsides are and knowing a little about different manufactures will go a long way toward getting a you top of the line quality knife at an affordable price. This past year I have become a huge Becker fan. I have knives that cost over $400 that are made of the same 1095 high carbon with the similar proportions similar design that are every bit as good as any of Beckers $50 to $70 knives. KA-Bar has a number of other designs that compare favorably with other high end knives. Many high end knives are copies or variants of KA-Bar standard models. Same goes for Mora and many other manufactures that have been making excellent knives for decades. Just because they do not look tacti cool and do not distribute DVD's of themselves slashing pigs to bits does not mean that they don't make a superior tool for the job at hand.

Those who know carry a Sebenza! Honestly, pick up a Chris Reeve and hold it, hold a Strider, not a Buck, a Strider. Then Hold that made in China spec ops Smith and Wesson and say you don't see a difference. I guess if they didn't sell they would not make them. It goes both ways for the primium to the el cheapos. I have had both and definately prefer and carry quality.

Same thing goes in just about all aspects of the consumer life. Beer for example is the same way in many regards. If I want a good beer I'm not going with Milwaukee's Best or Natty lite. It's either going with a good microbrew like Steel Rail's Pale Ale or Flying Dog's Hefeweizen...or occasionally a Sam Adams Winter brew. Point is, the quality tends to be in the name. Is there going to be the occasional oddball screw up in there? Sure, but it's not normal. ![]()

I don't know about a $10 Frost Cutlery knife, but I kind of agree with you, to a point.
A several hundred $ knife is not going to necessarily perform better than a $50-100 knife, however, I seem to break the real cheap ones or their locks don't do what they're supposed to do. I notice quite a few people mentioning how well their Spyderco Delica/Endura performs & they're right. Those are excellent knives for the $. Even some of lower priced Bokers aren't bad, but for the $, it is hard to beat a Delica/Endura. Having said that, I don't usually carry a Delica/Endura. If I need something rustfree, I'll carry my SE Pacific Salt, otherwise the Spydercos I carry are a Lum Chinese ZDP, P'Kal, or waved Yojimbo. But I most often carry a CRK Umnumzaan or a small Sebenza. Could I get by with a Delica/Endura, a comparable Kershaw, or Benchmade? Sure I could & they'd all perform just fine. However, like the guns I carry, I like the quality & the "little things" of the mentioned knives. If you're happy with your $10 knife, great! However, I've had too many "cheapies" break on me to trust them.
