Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

The fact of the matter is that knife makers are selling knives, not full-on SD deployment systems. If they wanted to make sheaths all day and ponder a blades deployment for various angles and grip positions, they wouldn't be knife makers. The one knife maker/martial artist I know of is Fred Perrin and if you've seen a realio-dealio from his workbench you know that they look like *edited for content* when compared to the blades from knife makers who work steel exclusively.

I used to like the CRKT Bear Claw, but I got tired of not being able to deploy it effectively if I had to deploy it with my reaction side hand. Great grip with the dominant hand, like the La Griffe, but being hosed if things went south quickly and my dominant hand was unusable for whatever reason, like the La Griffe.
My new "funky grip" knife is the Spyderco Swick. I prefer it over the above two because I can still grip the knife effectively with both hands and while reaction side hand/trailing blade isn't optimal, it's not a cold, cruel joke like the above two knives. The true Wharncliffe blade thrusts better but doesn't have as extreme a cut compression at the tip as the Hornbill blades of the above two. The geometry is still very good for gunting strikes and what I call "running the knuckles" cuts after a stab. Spyderco also realized that any sheath they made to go with the Swick would be a waste of time so I was happy I wasn't wasting my money on soon-to-round-filed junk.
I really like the RAT Izula, especially for those who have less than 3" blades for their local jurisdictions. Great steel, high quality, and the grip felt fantastic in my hands when I was holding (Ok, I swinging it around like a complete psycho) a salesman's at the shop I was at. The stock sheath isn't perfect for SD deployment, but it's not a complete waste of fossil fuels, either. It has a nice and thick blade for the length so a stab gives good air-in, juice-out and IE wouldn't be a real problem. The low cost of this knife for a small, easy to conceal, and high-quality blade is hard to beat, IMO.
I'm with Perrin and MacYoung when I say that I like the Schrade Old Timer Sharpfinger for bigger than 3" but less than 3-1/2" blade jurisdictions. It's been a camper's delight for over 35 years now, is low in cost at typically under $20, and is made of good quality HC steel. Mine was sharp enough to shave with out of the box. The cons are a sheath that is complete garbage and a grip and blade shape that completely blows for IE use. For an effective SD knife though, it's hard (read: all but impossible) to do better for the price. Try it with a hammer grip and the hooking stabs a la D-Block/Shivworks to get your best mileage from this bargain basement badboy.

My two favorites, neither still in production and both with POS sheaths were the Spyderco Lum Fixed Blade and the Polkowski Casper Companion. In reference to the latter, buy them if you find them. I have one put up for each of my kids.- George
What/Who do you recommend for a sheath for this knife. I just picked one up a couple weeks ago for $125. Thought it was worth getting for that price, like new , no box.

I just grabbed an absolutely fantastic kydex G-Clip Swick sheath for $21 shipped from Scott Gere. Absolutely top-notch service, he called me back within five minutes and we spent 15 minutes on the phone to make sure that I was getting the sheath that suited my needs, and quick delivery. You could do much worse for a lot more money.

just throwing my knife/brand recommendation in the ring.... i love my Benchmade and have had several of their knifes to me they are one of the toughest knifes and to boot they have awesome customer service. I have a Benchmade Griptilian in D2 steel and i love it, i send it off once a year to get sharpened and checked out for warranty work and it always comes back with an awesome edge and smooth action. I do like the Kershaw Onion knife i've had that and like it alot as well. but to me the Benchmade is just stronger and feels better in my hand.

just my $ .02

Are you talking bout the Lum? If so you did well. I would direct you to Phil Smith Knives - Custom Knives and Kydex Sheaths

Phil is has studied with me for about 7 yrs and is a knife and sheath maker. He understand carry and deployment. I also have the knife to loan him to mold so you don't need to send yours.- George

Fixed blade is really not an option for me. I'd have no comfortable way to carry it.

Is trainer the same as drone?

It would be carried in addition to a gun in most circumstances.

A smallish (3-4" blade) fixed blade carried IWB, or on a mercharness (if your clothing is compatible) is pretty much unnoticeable. You likely wouldn't even feel it. Not that I'm trying to talk you into anything. Fixed blades are much easier to deploy quickly than folders though, and they're really not difficult to carry.

Not exactly, though a lot of people use the terms interchangeably. A drone is a replica of a particular model of knife. A trainer is a generic knife simulator.
The knife with the red scales, and the extra holes in the blade is a drone.

These are trainers.
