Yep I used to use 00 buck but I'm switching to #4. I'll take 27 pellets over 9. I belive the #4 will dump more energy and will deliver much more trama.

I retract my first statement, seems as if they have had a price surge around here. That same 870 I said I could get here for $260.00 not on sale! well I just looked it up from my same FFL dealer and it is now $315.00. I should have bought it back then. Even with the rebate in August I will be spending more now, I wonder if the rebate is the reason for the increase? Something is funny around here.

The Marine Magnum is also more, it was $519.95 is now $565.00! has anyone herd of a price jump with Remmington as of late?

Just a note about 870's that no one seems to notice...

the "Express" 870's are not parkerized, they are bead blasted and blued for a dull finish. Their stocks and forearms are made from hardwood. These are what Walmart and other stores usaully sell anywhere from 230 up to 260. They are not a bad deal.

The "Special Purpose"is a different shotgun and it will be printed on the reciever. It is a parkerized finish, had handrubbed oiled walnut stocks and will generally come with a 26 inch barrel or a rifled barrel whereas the Express will usaully have a 28 inch barrel.

The Special Purposes will be at least $100 more than the Express...sometimes more. These were the first "turkey hunting" shotguns that came out around 1982.

Although they look alot alike, they really arent.

Not exactly. A few studies showed that #4 shot didnt have near the penetration that 00 or 000 buck did and that there were more failures to stop immediatley. I believe that was at 25 yards.

Although I cant remember the source, (maybe FBI study?) it caused a lot a Police depts. to switch from no.4 buck to 00 or 000 buck.

Of course, if you are in your house and the range is measured in feet instead of yards, I doubt that it would matter...

Yes I know that at a distance the 00 will probably work better. But My 870's main role is for inside the apartment and at those distances I believe #4 to be equal of better.

For those longer shots I have 1oz slugs and rifle sights on my 870. I'll be keeping a healthy supply of #4, 00, and slugs around so I'll have my options.

Actually, you would prabably be better served with number 4 in an apartment where penetration could be an issue.

For that matter, I doubt that anyone could stand a hunting load of number 6 shot. That would be even better for close quarters living.

Well lets talk about this. I have 00 in mine but I am very concerned about pentration. I have a two year old on the other side of the house and I have to be careful about the direction I fire in. Would #4 Buck be better in that respect? I know some folks in my predicament load with birdshot but I don't agree with that school of thought. There is not nearly enough penetration most of the time even at inside range.

C'mon guys lets debate this.

Well...look at it like this.

If some of that #00 gets away from you when shooting a badguy and you inadvertently kill your kid on the other side of the wall, you really havent accomplished much.

Using #6 shot will do the same thing to the perp, without the danger of going though a standard stud wall, and those that do wont have the energy to do much.

A standard load of 6 wont "open" up for at least several feet, and if the BG is in range it will be basically like hitting him with a slug. Even if it didnt put him down right there, he couldnt stand getting hit with a few more shots.

Seriously, would anyone here want to take a load of even #shot at less than 15 or 20 feet ?

If you are worried about penetration, the lighter loads would be better.

This has been debated over and over again. To each his own on what one chooses to use. The box-o-truth pretty much tells the whole story anyway, if I had the link to it I'd post it.

I use OO buck and I am very aware of rule #4! I have a house on 5 acres though.

As HG says - heavy BB's and slugs in particular could well be ambarrassing re penetration regarding walls.

I keep #4 loads in my 870 and reckon that these at close quarters will very easily ''deter'' any aggressor!

BTW Bob - scroll up to my post #4 - you'll see my ''Special Purpose'' and it's 20" which I am sure was as supplied to the guy I bought it from. Lovely shottie BTW it takes screw in chokes and the guy I bought from had the rifles choke to use for his Turkey shooting. I keep the full choke installed (wonder why!! !)
