Have to go with Savage too, although the CZs are excellent also.

I've got to say personal favorite is the Remington 700. However, as far as the best bargain out there..have to agree with the majority the Savage is a great package for a really fair price.

I still have one my Dad purchased in 1948 for $12.50. A Remington '03-A3

Still shoots great. Tough to beat for the price.

Remington 700 ADL, (stay away from the BDL), or even the Remington semi-auto

Savage 110

Ruger MK77 (If you have the loot to drop a Timney Trigger into it. The factory trigger is far to heavy)

Win. 70 (if made before 1964)

Now you have to think about glass Leupold, Bushnell, Weaver, and Millit are some goodies. That I can think of, off hand.

Well I have to disagree slightly with the Savage being the best deal for the money. Only because the Stevens model 200 (made by savage) is identical to the Savage except for the accu-trigger. Although an aftermarket trigger group can be had for around $60. At Gander Mountain and (believe it or not) Wal-Marts that still sell rifles a model 200 can be had for less than $300. Wal-mart will probably have to order it, but they all can, as long as they still sell guns. go to http://www.savageshooters.net/SavageForum/ and look around in the bolt action center fire section. You can even get extra barrels and change calibers as long as you stay with the same action (ie. 30-06 is long action/ .223 is short action).

Well, you learn something new everyday. I just read up on the model 200, and for a basic no frills rifle with the right stuff, I believe that it really offers an excellent no-nonsense alternative to the Savage. It uses the Savage 110 action, is dual pillar bedded and free-floated. The main difference appears to be the finish and the trigger group. It runs about $100+ less than the Savage. Good catch. I may get one myself in 7mm mag.

If you're buying new it's gonna be hard to beat the Stevens for Value.

Personally I prefer the Remingtons, all but the 710 that is. I recently picked up an older 700 ADL in 30-06 for $239, scope and all. The scope is a cheap Bushnell but the mounts and rings are Weaver. I'll mount a better scope and see how it shoots.

I bought an almost identical 270 a couple of years ago for my oldest son. Mounted a Sightron SII on it and it's a tack driver.
