I was just digging around here and came up with something that might help. I've got a Six Enterprises stock here, it's injection molded, but extremely stiff and a far cry from the junk that comes on factory rifles. This one doesn't seem to be made of the same type of material.

Anyway, it's a tinkerer's project, it doesn't have a recoil pad or a pistol grip cap. The recoil pad looks like it would accept one of the press in limbsaver type pads. It's a Long Action BDL stock, cut for a mountain rifle (or Ti) contour barrel. I'd take $50 shipped for it.

I bought a Ruger MK77 Mark II 30-06 about 3 months ago in about 98% condition. Synthetic stock, stainless barrel- "All weather package" on Gunbroker.com for $400.00. The only modification I have done to it so far is add a Limbsaver buttpad on the buttstock, the synthetic stock definitely removes some weight, but adds considerably to recoil. (Sighting it in with about 40 rounds, [[I am 6'1" 155-160lbs]]the Limbsaver pad helped! W/O the Limbsaver it would have been painful in the end!!) Its a very solid gun, great, reliable Mauser style action. I have not noticed an 'unreasonably' stiff trigger as mentioned by the fellow from Gainesville, but next time I hit the range I will pay closer attention to it.

My vote goes for the Ruger MK77 Mark II, although I have heard good things about Savage. From what I have heard(and not through my own personal experience) Savages are usually a little heavier, but good guns.

Thumbs up

Remington Sportmans 76 pump. The savage 110 bolt action is nice too but I prefer a pump.

I would recomend the Savage. The stevens might be cheaper, but the advantage of accu trigger would be worth a little extra. The old savage triggers are notoriously heavy, I have one in .308 and it's a good accurate rifle, but I wish it had the accu trigger.(mine was made before they offered it)

Though mine shoots sub MOA with the heavy trigger & right ammo, if I had the choice at the time, I'd pay the extra up front to avoid the hassle of changing the trigger group put later.

Mine is also VERY ammo sensitive. (I'm talking 4'' groups to 3/4" groups depending on ammo selection) Be prepared to try a lot of different loads in order to find out what works the best in yours. Good luck

Another thought, if recoil is a factor for you then I'd have to recommend a Remington auto. It's like night and day compared to a bolt action in my experience.

+1 for the 03-A3. I love mine. Picked it up for under $200.00 has a brand new barrel on it and it shoots like a dream.

.30-06

Savage or Stevens depending on how you want the trigger. Also look at the Mossberg ATR, very reasonable and camo -finishes also. If you're a lefty, like I am, don't overlook the H&R single shot. More accurate than you'd think for a cheap gun. One I had in .223 would shoot MOA with more than one factory load. Also available in different finishes.

I also have the Ruger M77MKII "All Weather" .30-06 with a Nikon 3x9x40 Buckmaster scope. Paid $425.00 NIB about 8 yrs. ago. It has been a tackdriver (even with the factory trigger) with Remington Core-Loc 165gr. ammo. I have heard the Savage is a great rifle for the price, but I would definitely recommend the Ruger.

Just my .02

If anyone in the Dallas area is looking for a Ruger 77 stainless/synthetic in 30-06, let me know. I know where one is for $400.

I just finished up my 30-06 Project. Definately on the cheap. I had picked up a very nice older 700 ADL from a Pawn Shop. I don't care for the old ADL wood stocks, so I was looking to upgrade.

I picked up a cheap take off stock from a 700 CDL and installed in along with a Kwik Klip detachable magazine conversion. not sure what scope I'm going to mount, probably an older Tasco Euro Class 4x I have on the shelf. This is an excellent scope, 30mm tube, made in Japan, and I have several of them in various configurations.

Thanks to all for the advice.

As of yesterday I am the proud new owner of a Savage 111 30-06. Wooden stock. Used but looks great. $329 base price and added a Bushnell 3-9x 40mm scope for another $89. Haven't shot it yet but will soon.

Need to rethink my home range which currently lives in a ravine and only lets me "play" out to 50 yards.

Thanks again.
