.308 M1A, and a .308 Savage or Remington Tactical rifle. Nuff said.

I Love to shoot my old 30-30 winchester 94, but EOW (End Of World) I really don't know what I would want. I suppose in a different location where long distance is really needed, a decient 30-06 or .308 would be nice.
Remember Lew, it's the man not the machine! The latest greatest tacticool equipment won't be of any benefit if you ain't a rifleman first. Look at it this way, ballisticly, your ol model 94 is just a lever actuated AK.

I'll take my HK G3 and Savage Tactical, both in .308.

Could you go over the process briefly or suggest sources of info on the matter? I'm from the city; I received some survival training in the Marines (did a couple rotations through the now defunct JOTB in Ft. Sherman, Panama), however this is a whole different ball game. I'm gona have to find a hunter's school

Well, I don't know about you guys, but in my case. I try keep a good stock of every caliber I shoot. I can honetly say I can't think of a firearm that I don't have at least 250 rounds on hand for.

As for what two would I choose if I could only take 2? Hard choice. Probably one of the old mosin nagant 91/30's and my little .22 marlin. It isn't a big game gun, but you can drop 500 rounds of ammo in to a couple of pockets if you have to, it may not be a primary SD weapon, but it will keep small game on your plate with the best of them.

In a more realistic situation, I would suggest that families band together. In which case a long gun for every adult would be a minimum of 4. In that case I would suggest at least one person have a 12ga, and another have an sks/ak type rifle with a hi cap mag on it.

In any event, I would much rather shelter in place, as long as possible, and hook up with a few people know who can be trusted.
Then wait till most everything on the road has stopped moving. Gas up the vehicles from my small fuel reserve and head for my wifes parents up in the hills.

I'll second one of the rifles being a .22. You'll never go hungry if you have one around and you can carry thousands of rounds in a backpack easy.

It's really hard to think of a sub moa long distance rifle that I'd want to beat up like that. I'm guessing a bolt action .308 of some kind. I'd have to carry a handgun for close up defense though. More gear is fine though as long as I know I have a use for it at some point.

I would not take a bolt gun, anything I need to shoot will be within range of my M1A with the range finder good to 800 yds., flip two levers on the Arms #19, it's an iron sighted battle rifle good to 400 realistically on humanoid threats.

Take off the range finder and throw two more levers and I've got an ANPVS4 N/V capable rifle thats good to 300 yds or a little further. This rifle is set up for just this type of scenario. 400rds limit? Thats okay, 308 means 300 fall to it. Thats a lot of people down and out with one rifle, day or night.

The other rifle would be my Marlin 39AS in .22. It's a dead on killer at 100 yds on anything that moves, and could also easily be used by the wife to defend with out to that distance. Head shots are a breeze when you can bust sub 3 inch diameter cans all day with it with the open sights at 100yds. It will take game, and 400 rds is no weight to carry.

The other choice for "take out for two" right now would be my slicked up Rossi stainless 357 20" levergun and the model 65 4 inch 357 S+W. 400 rds for each and I can still do everything I'll need to do with them, though the distances will be severely limited per the requirements of this thread. Both of these need little to no cleaning so maintenance would not be an issue really.

How to rend animal fat: Seperate fat from meat, bone and grisle with knife, heat in frying pan and strain through cloth. Not as good as store bought but will protect and lubricate everthing from your boots to yor rifle. Definately better then nothing. Note: some animals have more fat then others, Bears and Hogs have the most..
You can also use nightcrawlers if you cant find anything else. Some fruits and vegatables are high in oil also, such as olives. To extract the oil, crush the fruit add some water to cover fruit, heat to boiling then let sit till cold, shim off oil from top.
