Like another thread I started recently reguarding the best Sig for an LEO I cannot afford a new gun right now. I have no plans to buy the rifle right now, I was just wondering what the members of this forum would consider to be the best rifle for an LEO squad car. A new handgun will be my next two purchases and they may or may not be purchased before I get into the academy. The rifle won't be purchased for quite a while.

Hello,

Planning ahead is good.

I got the impression that you were planning to go buy it tomorrow!

I understand being a starving student as I am currently in my third college stint at present, hopefully for some marketable skills this time that I'm willing to do.

Oh, I'm all for that. Gun shop away!

However, my whole point is that if you have a particular mission statement for a firearm, don't buy until you know what that mission statement is! :)

Not coming down on anyone. When I thought I was going to be a cop I went out and purchased the required pistol, a duty belt, handcuffs, a nightstick, and a few other items. Set me back several hundred dollars and a Ruger Super Single Six I wish I still had. Turns out I decided, 3/4 of the way through school, that police work wasn't my thing and now I'm stuck with the stuff, except for the handgun which I used in partial trade for something else at the gunshop.

Just speaking from experience.

Nope, I'm not buying anything for the academy until I get the conditional offer of employment. I already have a gun on the accepted list (Sig 220) but I had that before I applied. To tell you the truth I don't even know if APD allows officers to carry rifles in their squad cars. Answers are hard to come by right now.

I picked the FAL as I served with them, no doubt the AR-15 will be a good choice, lots of options and lots of ex-US serviceman know them well. A couple of the RCMP I know up North carry the M305 (Norinco M14) in their cars as it can take a large animal or a BG from far.

ok,,,, after 29 years on the job,,, i go with the remington 870 shotgun. the rifle is good for long shots, but,,, your department will have regulations for/against the rifle. on the road you will need a shotgun. come to think of it, i don't carry the issue a4 on "raids", i carry the "870". hard to beat the "870" for work and/or all around work,. so i would look for a good used "870' with a 18 inch barrel, and you can change out the stocks to fit your body.
