I would recomend Mossberg over 870 as well. I've seen a few 870s have problems. I have owned 5 different Mossbergs and have frineds with them and my dad has shot the same one for 30 years without fail.
We had this discussion on another thread. I guess the newer 870s aren't of as good a quality as the old wingmasters. I had an 870 express and didn't like it. My cousin has one and has problems with it regularly. Just my opinion based on personal experience. Your mileage may vary.

UPDATE:
Well I ended up with the 870. Funny thing was I asked to look at the 870's and Mossy 500's and I was shown the standard guns and then I noticed a pump at the back that had a special stock on it. I asked the guy, "Is that a Knoxx SpecOps stock on that pump in the back?" Sure enough he had one 870 Tactical left; already has the SpecOps stock, 18" barrell, 7 shot capacity too so I was tickled. Also tickled to get it for under my $500 ideal budget too! It's in OD Green and it looks pretty mean.... ![]() Thanks to everyone for their advice. Now I've got to go read the threads to see what loads folks are running for HD. THANKS AGAIN GANG!!

Thats a very nice gun, but it only holds 7 in the tube? Hmm, My dads Mossberg 835 (3 1/2" 12 ga.) will hold 7 2 3/4" in the tube, If memory serves, mine holds 5 in the tube. I suppose with the 18" barrel they can't, but I was still thinking the Mossberg defender model (name may be wrong) held 9 with a 18" barrel. Good find! Crexrun

The Mossberg Persuader can come with a 5 shot mag and 18" or 8 shot mag with 20" barrel.

Remington, Mossburg, (Winchester, FN)
As Social Shotguns go...the Remington vs. Mossburg debate won't be settled today (nor will the Autoloader vs. Pump). Personally, I'm a Remington 870 man but have always wished the safety was tang-mounted like that of a Mossburg 500 series. Both have proven themselves capable & durable in the hands of many thousands of shooters over multiple decades of production. The Remington holds a slight edge in availability, popularity & serves as the starting point for some of the most advanced fighting shotguns (Wilson Combat, Vang Comp, etc.) in Military & Law Enforcement use. Let's not forget the very speedy Winchester pump models (practically as fast as an autoloader) & the new FN models just recently adopted by the U.S.M.C.
All things considered, for combo sport & defense use, in a cost-effective package...almost HAS to be the Rem 870 Express Magnum, 12 gauge, synthetic stock, Home Defense model. Then pick-up a spare vent rib, 24-26" rem-choke barrel for bird, waterfowl, turkey, coyote, deer, whatever. It will ALWAYS be worth what you pay for it & isn't too expensive to use as an emergency boat paddle (like every OTHER Duck Hunter I've ever known)! Good Shooting, Ghost Tracker |

It's definitely cost effective! I was tickled to get such a potent weapon compared to my handguns for such a low price. Especially being outfitted for HD with the short barrel and stock on it like that. I'm just glad they didn't have one with some Vang Comp work on it or I woulda' brought it home!!!
I think I'll look into VCS for the second barrel for this gun.

Oh, while I'm at it what are some good setups for a Tac Light on the 870? I've looked at a few online but want some end-user feedback if possible.

Surefire makes both intregrated light/forearm combos AND multi-rail (aluminum) forearms. Little bit pricey but rock-solid pro equipment. I've gone for the multi-rail & added a Blackhawk "Gladius" flashlight. If y'all haven't seen it's strobe feature, do yourself a favor & check it out. It's a serious weapon all by itself. How many other LED flashlights do you know of that can disorient / disable a threat with LIGHT? It's got to be experienced to be believed. EVERYBODY who has seen mine is saving-up for one. Everyone.
