Benelli versus Mossberg
I've been thinking of saving for a home defense shotgun...I'm not a hunter and don't have much shotgun experience, but there were a couple that caught my eye. I'd been quite keen on the idea of the Mossberg 590 for some time now, with some sort of folding or pistol grip stock. However, recently, I saw the Benelli M4...I was in love for about ten minutes til I saw the price tag. Then I saw the Benelli M2, and the price tag still was a bit too high. But I looked at the Benelli Super Nova Tactical, which is another pump action, and the price was fairly equivalent.
I know Mossbergs (as well as the Rem 870) are the classic choices...can anyone compare the Mossy 590 to the pump action Benelli tacticals? What about quality? I don't know much about Benellis in general. I was rather smitten by the M2, though. So I'm very conflicted...the old standby Mossberg, the pumpaction Benelli, or keep saving and get the semi-auto M2 Tactical? |

I'm getting a Benelli Nova Tactical (not Super Tactical) myself.
They are supposed to be excellent shotguns. Mad Ogre has a great review of them: http://www.madogre.com/Interviews/be...al_purpose.htm

I kind of expected a flood of Mossberg votes given their general prevalence...to be honest I was definitely leaning towards the Benelli. We'll see (got to save up first)! Thanks for the review link, too!

....it's still early in the day; I'm sure lots of Mossberg fans (I'm one too, but I already have a Remingon 870, but I always wanted a Nova and the price is right for this one) will weigh in later today.

Think about what accessories (if any) you might want to add later. Like side saddles, sling mounts, and see how they compare in price.
It's cheaper to hotrod a Mustang than it is a Ferrari. |

Benelli vs Mossberg ???? Come on,you can make the question harder than that.
Benelli !!! Try to find a used M1 Super 90 in (NRA) excellent to very good condition. Grab up a Brownell's catalog and order 25-35(~) bucks worth of replacement parts and violla(wah-lah) you got a brand new weapon. A weapon that you can be proud of. Nobodys proud of their Mossberg. (just kiddin') I own two and like 'em both, but they're just not a B E N E L L I ----- |

That may be true, but the Ferrari will still kick the crap out of the Mustang any day of the week, and look good doing it! Check out my M2. I can't say enough good things about it. http://www.combatcarry.com/vbulletin...ad.php?t=16753

I've fired a Nova in 20 guage. It liked it OK but I'll stick with my 870. I did like the mag cutoff button. I think other pump makers should start equiping theirs with mag cuttoffs

I've got an M3 Super 90...waited a few years to get it and found one used for $500....best HD shotgun I've owned.
I use it also for skeet....as well as my Benelli Nova (pump) |

Maybe I've got prices all skewed. From what I saw on ImpactGuns, the Benelli Super Nova Tactical was $389, with pistol grip stock and ghost ring sights. The Mossberg 590 with the ghost ring sights is $395. So really there isn't a price difference between those two pump-action shotguns. And to be honest, while I was planning to extensively mod the Mossberg (folder stock, heat shield), the only mods I'd want to do on the Benelli is perhaps some sort of tactical light attachment, eventually.
I'm leaning towards the Ferrari, still! |

I know the Benelli Nova Tactical's possible "add-on's" include a two-shot mag extender, ghost ring (GR) sights, "sidesaddle," mercury recoil reducer and bracket, and scope mount...that's it. What sort of stuff does the Super Nova add, besides a pistol grip stock and GR sights?
The Nova Tactical I'm getting is LNIB, with GR sights and the two-round extender for $350 shipped. Not a bad price.

Yeah, those of us privilaged few that know the secret, can position an extra round on top of the loading gate for even more firepower.
WARNING: Most game wardens know this trick. -------- |

Hit the button on the forearm and it cuts-off the magazine, allowing the shooter to eject the round in the chamber and not reload from the magazine.
It's a neat feature other shotguns should have.

The Nova is a great pump shotgun. I like the ruff and tuff finish and or lack of it for wet hunting. I just shot my fall turkey with the Nova. Its my preferred turkey gun Spring and fall. Blk.26" .680 choke and 3" ww 1-3/4 .oz 5 hi-speed turkey load.

For home defense I have a Mossberg 500 persuader 12 gauge that i bought three years ago for about 220 (the first firearm I bought for myself after school on my 18th birthday.) It has a 20 inch barrel and holds 8. I put an ATI full length stock with pistol grip on it. Have proabalby over 2000 rounds through the gun without a glitch. I like the safety position on it, and the slide release is easy for me to use even with the pistol grip. for the price, which hasnt risen much since then, its a great gun and can definately serve your HD needs

Okay, you're looking at the M4 to the 590, not the Nova line. There is no comparison- Benelli. Easier "non-traditional position operation", faster action, capable of operating at maximum efficiency in close confines(try running an 18" pump in a 30" wide hall, with short corners). I've had both the 590, the M1 and the M3, and worked all three hard- all "playtime" for me, little more "professionally relative" to my friends.. Benelli is worth the extra money, if you want the best tool.

Give this some thought before buying...
I don't know if you are married or not, have kids or not, but my two cents is the following. My combat shotgun experience has been with a 12 gauge Hi Standard (yeah, I know...old timer).
HOWEVER, I bought a Mossberg 505 20 guage youth shotgun that is as fine as any sawed off that I've carried...and I've carried a few of those. My wife can handle it, which is important. A 12 gauge is tough for a lot of people to handle. The mossberg is equivalent of a sawed off. All you have to do is bring it up to your shoulder, if you need to (don't aim or you'll break your thumb or gouge your face with this nice neat smaller weapon) and pull the trigger -- crank another round in, pull..crank..pull...crank. For consideration based on a lot of experience, cranking the first round in creates adverse fearful passive feelings in experienced criminals and nut cases, and I've worked against those with my 12 gauge...against some really bad people. That sound is very unnerving, and the 20 gauge makes the same sound, and it's unmistakable. My recommendation to you for general home defense is the Mossberg 505 20 gauge youth shotgun with #3 buck..you don't need 3", either. Anyway, that's my vote...I know, I know, you can laugh all you want to, but I know what works...and I want something around that my wife can handle well. Regards |
