one thing no one has mentioned, all you need is one shot by killing an enemy and then you go get his rifle and whatever else you need.kill em and take what you need, its been done before. sj

That is assuming that the enemy is alone, a rather iffy assumption if you ask me. And you would be exposing yourself to others while gathering the gear.

I do feel that a thuddy thuddy would be an accurate GHTF rifle though. I would not feel under gunned with my Marlin 336.

I've decided to do both. I just purchased an Olympic Arms 15 and my Winchester is on lay away

When I was at Gunsite, Jeff Cooper mentioned that they had just run a "Carbine" course designed around the AR15/AK style carbines. A guy showed up with a Winchester M94 and cleaned the course. The only mods he had were a trigger job, a "peep" sight, and a red ramp front sight. Total cost to him was about $150 to $200.

Jeff gave it some thought: Less disturbing image(Look! A gun like my grandad's hunting rifle!); No uneccesary projections (tall sights, box magazine, or pistol grip) to catch on things; Able to reload without removing the magazine; Cartridge powerful enough to take deer to 200 yds; Can recover from shots fast enough to take another aimed shot - at least as fast as one could with a semi-auto; Hmmmm...

Jeff kept one of these at the Sconce; He called it his "Urban Assault Rifle".

I fixed my M94 up the same way as soon as I got home.

In Pursuit,

Jeff Cooper thought so...

I remember reading some of the Col.'s work several years ago, where he had several gunners run an assult course, first with an AK, then W/M-94 Winchester. A good percentage did better, both speed and accuracy, W/the lever gun. Food for thought....

Col. Cooper referred to a students Winchester trapper as a "Brooklyn Carbine." I always liked that one.

Was the next day...
I was in the local gun shop and I spotted the Marlin 336SS (stainless). It was a weak moment, but I just had to add that .30-.30 to my family. I decided against the scope (I have an BushMaster AR-15 with an E.O. Tech), so I had them install a fiber optic front site...should work well for these eyes.

Dakotaranger...your thread pushed me over the 'waiting' line...Thanx...

Stay armed...stay safe!

A .357 lever action and 4" revolver make an excellent emergency firearms kit.

Powerful enough to hunt anything in the lower 48, and adequate for defense as well.

I don't exactly have money falling out of my pockets ... but I do have a Marlin 336. It was the first gun I ever owned and one my Dad bought me for Christmas when I was 16. In the middle of all the gift giving he handed it over to me and I was so shocked I don't think I could say much the rest of the day. It's a little scratched up now from all those seasons in the field but if things ever go South on us that's the rifle I'll be reaching for.
